Can someone please tell me why there are hangups about weather the pony is called Derpy or Muffins?! As far as I know she has been refered to as Derpy when spoken to or about in the Friendship Is Magic series. So where on earth is the name Muffins coming from?

Originally Derpy was spotted in episode and said muffins. She got the name Derpy from the Fandom. When the writers gave her a speaking role in one episode and Rainbow Dash called her Derpy the Fan were so happy. But some parents were not as derpy to them was bad. So they change her voice and she never really had a bigger part other then seeing her around ponyville from time to time. Some people even wanted to get rid of her. But the fans love the little pony so much and Hasbro Knows that it can make money off of it so they pretty much just don't say Derpy and in that one episode where she says muffin the fan started saying she loved them so the name kinda stuck.

So they can market her as the muffin pony. She also call Ditzy Do some times.

Ok, thanx:) I must have missed the "Muffins" episode ^^
Why is the word or name Derpy bad? Does it mean clumsy or something? It isn't used in my country....

Its not just parents who don't like the name/speaking portrayal. A lot of fans also dislike it. Personally, I can't stand the name and hate how she was portrayed. There were tons of arguments and fights on MLP Arena to the point that the name was banned, and still is, but I don't know if anything went down here on the TP. I don't want to get into why because its such a can of worms and I'm used to talk of it being banned, but yeah it can be a negative word (especially when combined with the speaking scene, her voice and the characters' actions). The word doesn't bother me as a whole but I don't think its an appropriate name for a character in a children's TV show/toy line.

I call her Bubbles/Bubblecup, after a G3 pony. Its a lot nicer than Muffin/Muffins or a muffin drawing imo.

I think Bubbles would have been a much better name than Muffins! I also like Bubblecup a lot!

I've always hated "Muffin", I call her Derpy Hooves. But since Hasbro wanted to safe route, they should've called her "Ditzy Doo" it's more pony like to me and it's more fitting for her :p

i dont know. its a mess, derpy is a childish insult for stupid or stupid looking. i dont even know what to call this pony anymore.

people got upset because they thought she was being used to make fun of mentally handicapped people.

nevermind all the idiotic characters ranging from beavis and butthead to spongebob to uncle grandpa. funny how it seems they never go after them.

muffins makes no sense as a name.

@Leave a Whisper Beavis and Butthead are not marketed to 5 year olds. Just because something is a cartoon doesn't mean its for kids. Also there are a lot of people that hate them.

Recent Spongebob I haven't seen enough of to comment. Uncle Grandpa is one of my boyfriend's littlest siblings' favorites. Its dumb, really really dumb, but I never saw anything making fun of people with disabilities in the episodes I've watched.

@Taxel

This is true. I never thought they were making fun of mentally challenged people ...but you know how Uber PC culture is. They have to be constantly on the alert for anything that could possibly Offend Them! How else would they know what to be offended by otherwise? *rolls eyes*

Beavis and Butthead was a show I missed out on in my childhood years due to the accursed parental block. I actually recently saw it myself for the first time and I swear I could feel brain cells popping out of existence. Didn't miss anything in my middle school years.

Uncle Grandpa is yet another obnoxiously dumb show. Le sigh.

To call someone a derp is to call them stupid, and it's used as a derogatory term for people with learning disabilities. Personally, I thought it was Rainbow Dash who acted like a jerk in that episode. I thought Derpy Hooves added a bit of diversity that you don't see a lot of in cartoons.

Tbh it wasn't "the parents" though... Actual real developmentally/intellectually disabled people (both parents and not) were (and are) upset by the episode and her general characterization by the fandom in the fact that it leaked over into the show...
"Derpy" has pretty much become another stand in for "r*t**ed" and is often used in the same manner. As has been said they replace her name with a muffin in merch "because bronies"... Again. lol
Also, just wanna say, the fact she doesn't have a bigger part isn't due to outside influences, she was always supposed to be a "wheres Waldo" type background character.
