The story begins with the first of the Rainbou family- Rainbow Reaper- and tells of how she came to be, establish her life in a harsh climate and give birth to her only child, Rainbow Harvest.
The second part chronicles the early life of Rainbou and his mother Rainbow Harvest as she tries to bring him up as well as she can without the support of a herd. It's in foalhood that the young stallion begins to wonder about his estranged grandmother as he watches his mother struggle.
The third part follows Rainbou and his 'daughter', Baby Rainbou.
