Collecting taboos

I would have asked, out of curiosity, what other things that lady happened to collect. While fakies might not be a big deal in the MLP universe there are plenty of collections where fakes are a traumatic bane among the community.

For me, it's my collection in MY house. I'm not collecting in the hopes of hitting it big (investment) by reselling and I'm not collecting in the hopes of seeing this collection in a museum one day. The only person that needs to be pleased with the aesthetics are the people exposed to it daily, that would be ME.

I am also of CannibalCow's mold. I do prefer a pony to be as close to its original condition (cut hair vs reroot) but I do appreciate a custom… I just don't like to see those lines blurred. But they can stand next to each other on a shelf. I also tend to be sentimental, and have a 5 year old mentality. ":cry2:OMG she will feel unloved and rejected if I don't give her a nice home!"

If you can't have a childlike happy disposition about collecting… then maaaaybe MLP is just not the collection for you.

You know, MedleyMaelstrom, I typically would have asked that and (really much more. I'm infamously nosy) but she literally switched gears on me so fast I was left stunned. I've worked with bipolars before, but it wasn't like a rapid cycling of emotion such as they suffer, but a 180 degree turn from casual friendliness to absolute fury. It was so disproportionate to the interaction we were having it was like her anger was a physical force that actually shoved me. I've never experience anything like it and while it was sudden then gone, I left immediately. I had no idea how to respond to such a display. Heh. Maybe she's possessed, I dunno.

I'm like you though, I buy what I love. I'm not buying for an investment (I remember so many doing that with comics in the 90s and their speculative purchases almost ruined the whole comic industry). I buy it for fun. If the Ponies ever stop being fun (after 3 decades unlikely) I would give them to someone who would love and care for them.

Maybe I'm not taking my hobby serious enough!

I have a lot of nos but they are really a compromise because I have a lack of space. I don't do: G2, fakies, buildings, many accessories, BBE, eyeshadow, holes (soda sippin, drink n wet), flutters (sorry), painted on pants, first tooth (except Baby Tic-Tac-Toe), extra bits of plastic stuck on except Winger's wings, non-glitter symbols where there is a glitter version (except Gusty), flocking, happy tails, talking, compartments... that's all I can think of for now. Seems a shame but there we are. :sadpony:

Rehaired ponies. I'd rather buy a pony with cut hair, 'cause I prefer it as original as possible. Don't get me wrong, I love restored ponies! I think it's awesome when people do that, and I do that myself too. But I won't count a rehaired pony in my collection as having said pony, but rather a custom.
Are there any rehairs where it's mostly impossible to tell it apart from the original (without taking off the head and looking inside, anyway)? If it's a really convincing restoration and looks the way it should, I'm not sure I'd mind.

Ah, but perhaps your not looking on the bright side of the nicer baits. They're practically a steal! :winkpony:

From what I've seen crawling around ebay so far, it seems like fair condition so-called "bait" ponies are often hugely overpriced, and fair condition ponies that AREN'T labeled "bait" are often bargain-priced. It may just be in my head, but, if not, I can't begin to explain this situation.

well maybe I just got lucky with her Masquerade, but this is ebay, if people can pull teeth...or well...people's money, then they will. I once saw a psychic offer up her services on ebay. best of all and I kid you not, shipping and handling costs were free.

Typically that's just the sort of thing I would have done. That day... the evi bunny fled in fear. If I'd had a crucifix maybe I would've been braver!

:winkpony:

Artemesia Flock, I certainly understand! Space is a huge problem for me. I have horrible guilt, knowing my poor Ponies are living like hobos in boxes right now.

Funny story about Baby Tic Tac Toe... I got one in lot an aeon ago (as I am old as the hills themselves) and there was this adorable little Baby, but she had a bubble of plastic on her lip. I picked at it and almost razored it off when I realized she was a First Tooth! I guess a Pony having just one tooth is so alien to me as an actual horse and pony owner (or popos and hohos, as I like to cal them) it just didn't register in my brain!

Duh.

it's cool evil bunny, we all have moments like that, she should just be glad that you didn't have your holy hand grenade that day.

I'm saving my hand grenade for a special occasion. The neighbours better be nice to me!

Ok...but remember! it only works if you spaketh the words with an English accent, 2 you shall not count and neither 4! 5 is right out! 3 shall be the number! No more. No less.:wolfgang:

I intentionally have my one Remco fakie displayed with my G1 collection.
That fake pony was a gift from my mother when I was little.
This WAS my personal little pony.
I didn't KNOW about the actual toy line until later!

We were born premature, and for the first 2 years of life wore barbie then doll clothing.
I didn't grow up with toys, just the shows and movies of My Little Pony.
Wanted to own them later, but collected Batman stuff to bond with my husband for about a decade.

Now, with G4 MLP I'm finally getting into this collecting thing, some G4, some G3 [Minty], and some G1's I've wanted since at least 2002!

But that Remco means a lot to me, even as a "fakie"!
My mother braided the tail, and I've kept it that way.

..I'm aware of that being a hoarding thing but it is sentimental to me.
*Long story short divorced parents, living situations, and my mother has gone from homeless, to living in her car, to shelter-hopping, to a live-in home type situation now.

So, I have a strained relationship with her as it is.

If someone complained to me about how I decide to do something to make me happy
...I don't even know how I would handle that properly, and honestly would almost guarantee an over reaction in anger or self-defense.

As for display?
I basically keep them hidden until I have the "perfect" way to display them.
Need the "correct" size/shape shelf first.

Once I have that, it is by type/category for the most part.

I have a long display case of the plush Build-a-Bear G4.
The case has other things, had my dolls in it, but now there's too many!
Dolls are now packed for the time being.
Case has plushies, and everything Derpy.

My large Australia exclusive Minty lays on top
[no tubes in the legs unfortunately I'll stand her up one day.]

I have the Equrestria Girls dolls, some out-of-box [I used them in cakes!]
Some in, but currently those are hidden and I'm picky about paint, box condition, and such so don't have all the ones I'd like yet.
Or a "proper" shelf to display them!

So, need a bigger G1 shelf, as my shelf has reserved spots for some, but with the
Satin Slipper Shoppe being so big I need more space!
..I'd like to get the Sundae Best ice cream ones in there eventually.

...I just like making "sets" and keeping those near each other.
*Sweet Celebrations Family
*Megan & Sundance
*Wedding pony [lack the groom Tux N Tails and Lucky right now, but I want the ties on them!]

The hunt is part of the journey & fun!

That's what matters in the end, others don't have to accept your way of liking something!

Heck, you could put it all together lunch boxes, thermos, figures, posters, shirts, art, blankets, key chains whatever!
It's yours to do as you please!

My twin, she likes to tear off tags, open boxes, play!
I like to keep displayed, clean, original condition if possible!
If not, at least "original" accessories!

Honestly, to each their own.
No one should shame another for how they enjoy something, that's just silly & defeats the whole purpose you know?

Good luck to the lady, and good for you for not fighting over it!

I collect fakies, so I'd be kind've miffed if someone got angry about them being there! If not for fakies, the pony craze may well have petered out during the long years where MLP was absent in some regions! I have always bought ponies wherever I could get them, and while now I do limit what I keep in my collection in terms of fakies and ponies both, that doesn't mean they're bad, it just means that I had to draw a line someplace. If some people decide to draw the line at actual MLP, that's fine too, but it's like religion, honestly, just do whatever it is that you do, and leave others to do whatever it is that they do that makes them feel whole. No judgement! Honestly I can't say I'd think less of a collector if they also collected anything else, with the exception of anything criminal, of course!
