In difficult times art can sometimes be the thing that get's left behind and put off. I find that to be because of time and more so often financial constraints. In honor of the creative spirit and the need to express oneself at a reasonable price I have created the first Cheap Custom Contest!

This idea sprang from Pikabubba's quite entertaining Pony "al Dente" Contest where I found many of my supplies at the dollar store. While doing that it dawned on me that many people don't do customs become of the costs. What people aren't aware of is that many supplies can be found cheaply if you use your imagination. The concept of this contest is to make a custom using items that are only found at Dollar and Discount Stores costing around $1/GBP each.

This contest is for all members! You don't need to be a veteran customizer to enter!

:dog_dance:The Rules:dog_dance:

1. All decorating supplies must be purchased at your local Dollar/Pound or 99 cents stores. This includes hair, notions, gems, glitter, jewels, wings, etc. Whatever you want to adorn your pony with.

Dollyhair, restoredoll or other similar hairs are not permitted regardless of if you already have purchased it or not.

You may use paints that you already own, however paint should not be the primary adornment.

EDIT: If your craft store has a Dollar/Pound Section you may purchase things from that section. However, only retail based purchases can be used as they can easily be checked for validity. No fleamarket or garage sale finds please.

2. Your Supplies cost can not exceed $5 USD/GBP if using a bait you already own whether it be a real My Little Pony or a Fakie of some sort.

If you need or choose to purchase a bait; your supplies cost can not exceed $7 USD/GBP and must be purchased at a Dollar/Pound or 99 cent store as well.

It may be best retain all receipts in case there is a dispute as to if your items qualify. This is for fairness to all and to avoid any complications.

Clarifications: If you are not able to do so the only other option is to take a photo of the item in question at the store with the price on it.

Acetone is not going to be considered as part of your supply cost. I consider this a preparation supply and not directly applying to adornment for the custom.

If you do not use this currency please pm me and we can discuss a suitable equivalent.

3. You may begin your work after pming me to join.
One Entry per person please!

4. This contest is about imagination and inventiveness. Entries will be judged on 3 categories:

Craftsmanship-5 points

Concept-10 points
Creativity-10 points

There will be 3 Judges total.

The judges are:

Gypsydancer
PikaBubba
Starrby

Please note that if you submit an entry you are not eligible to be a judge.

There will be two winners of this contest. One by the judges and one by the Viewer's Choice Poll.

5.

Entries are due July 31st at Midnight EST. You must pm me with the pictures and a little bit about your entry. Do not post your entries here!

6.

Winners will be announced on August 5th Time TBA. Each winner will receive a customizing kit worth at least $10 USD TBA at a later date. Some items it may include will be baits, hair, paints, dyes, and other fun tidbits.

Please PM me to Join and let the Contest Begin!!

I really like the idea of this contest. I think it will be fun to see what people come up with. The only thing that doesn't sit well with me is the above rule. I personally don't like adding things to my customs other than paint and hair. I have nothing against jewels and wings and whatnot, but it's just not my style outlet. So I don't know if I can enter the contest. Perhaps I could be a judge then. lol

This contest is all about creativity using found objects. It's not all about the painting and craftsmanship. I am trying to promote inventiveness and other people who don't usually customize to enter.

I hate stickies. I was so mad when I couldn't find this thread but it's right there on top! -fails-

You know I'm in GD =D

i may join but I already have dollar store hair that i don't have reciepts for, will this be a problem?

ooo this looks like such a fun idea! i love budget customs cause...well...i can't afford all the neat stuff half the time XD;;

i'm going to send you a PM i do believe...

oh quick question though-is Acetone legal to use? it costs over $1 (unless it's nailpolish remover from walmart that doesn't work well...) but if it's like the previously bought bait, is it exempt?

oh and another one! what if you were given something you know and can prove came from the dollarstore as a gift-do you need to count that in your pricing totals or can you "write it off"?

:reaper: Kat :reaper:

Ooh, this sounds fun. :) If I can make it to a $1 store soon enough, I'll enter. ^-^

Acetone is a supply that does not need to be included in your cost amounts as it's a preparation supply.

If you don't have a receipt, the best coarse of action is to try to see if it's still available in the store. If it is, take a picture of it with the pricing as a "proof" of sorts.

Any additional questions feel free to post them. These answers will also be added to the first post as clarifications.

;)

I just got back from the dollar store. I bought $3 worth of supplies and now I have one question. Would scrap fabric I have laying around be OK to use since I'm still under budget?

Question: Can we have accessories for the pony, if we purchse them from the discount (easier than using dollar/pound) store and we are still under budget? That's easy when buying at a place like Dollar Tree.

First of all, OMG AJ!!!!! <3! I missed you!!

Second, Yeah, this sounds fun, count me in :)

Sorry, but unless you bought it at one of the dollar stores it's not permitted. No supplies that you happen to have laying around.

Some places do sell bandanas. Perhaps you could get one of those instead?

Yes, you can use accessories but only when you purchase them from Dollar or Discount Stores and they fit the other requirements.

would it be ok to buy things from craft sections in places like ASDA if it's under 1 pound, or does it all have to be from poundland etc?

What about hair that is already on the bait pony? can you use that?

Yes, I have had that question already and have put that information in the main post.

Yes, If your bait already has hair you can use that as a supply.
