I started this sculpture in the Fall of 2008, nearly a year ago, and was stumped after sculpting and painting the body. I couldn't figure out how to get the hair the way I wanted it.

Today, I pulled her off the shelf and set her on my desk to ponder, and while chatting with my friend, Ginaiam, inspiration struck! I made her in a rustic, distressed style and the copper wire just seemed perfect, so after an hour of stripping, dividing, measuring and cutting up an old extension cord, she had hair! I curled it with my fingers and painted it and I love how she looks now! She's sat bald for so long, she looks fab with her new 'do. I did her color scheme a little on the red, rather than pink side because I like it better that way. I may put a glossy finish on her hair, not sure yet. I kinda think the matte look goes well with the primitive style.

*jumps up and down* here she is!

This is wonderful! The form is very proportionate, I like the texture of the body and the hair is in fact divine!

Thank you for the compliments. She is made from Celluclay which is a paper clay. I love the medium for primitive projects. It's fun to sculpt with (feels like sculpting with canned tuna), easy to add to once it's dry, and you can drill and sand it, paint it or mix paint with the clay before it dries. Down sides are that you have to sculpt in thin layers and let it dry in between (armature is a must) and that is is hard to create a truly smooth surface. There is another brand of paper clay (Creative Paper Clay) that is a very fine texture and I can't wait to try that. I am going to try to make some baby dolls and I wanted a smooth texture for their skin.

Here are some other projects I made with Celluclay:

Ooh, yeah I've heard of Celluclay. I use Creative Paper Clay with my preschool classes. It's a lot of fun; you can smooth it with water. --plus, I like the way it smells. ^_^

Yeah I think I will have to buy some next time I'm in Michaels. I think I saw it there. I'll be sure to print a 40% off coupon first.
