Hi Photoshop Pros,

I am new to Photoshop and I am wondering what the fastest way is to convert an image with a white background to a transparent image. For example, if I have clipart with a white background, how do I make the white part transparent so it can blend with a colored background, instead of having the white box around it?

I've been using the Photoshop Help, but I think what they are telling me is way too advanced for the basic thing that I am trying to do.

Thanks for all your help in advance!

-thinks back to her days of Photoshop-
I'm pretty sure there's a way to select all of one color and then you can just delete it (provided the layer underneath it is nothing but transparency)

Ugh, I wish I could specifically tell you how to do it, but I haven't used photoshop in almost 4 years. D:

i don't have photoshop, but in the program i use i promote it to the background layer and use the magic wand tool if possible ^_^ i have no clue if this made sense to you, but if you just need help i can do it for you :p sorry for being so silly

first make sure your image is a "Layer" not "Background" if it is "Background" double click it and a menu will pop up-just say yes. now it's a layer.

use your magic wand to select what you want to delete and delete it. in PS the gray checkerboard means it'll be transparent.

now if you want something under it you make a new layer and drag it under the one with your imae and just drawon the under one and you'll see it. or if you want it to be saved as a clear bg you need to save it as a GIF or a PNG

was that too technical for you? should i make a pictorial tutorial?

That was exactly what I needed! I didn't realize that it had to be a "layer" instead of a background... once I was able to change it, it worked like a charm just selecting and deleting what I didn't want!

Thanks so much... I knew you would all know how to do this! :)

t

What she said :p

Also a better way than using the magic wand tool would be to do a selection by color so that only colors in the range will be selected. Depending on what version of photoshop you have it will be in a different place. I think on CS2 it's under the selection toolbar. Sorry I'm not much help right now but it sounds like you got what you were looking for. ^.^
