Hey there!
I have a couple questions about your preferences on boxed ponies. If you have one mint in box, do you also collect one that is loose? I have a couple (Basic Fun and my favorite G3) and am struggling with not being able to touch them and am considering buying loose ones also, but space is an issue for me. The Basic Fun ones, I’m even considering unboxing and displaying loose once I can display, but I’m hesitant because they are so pristine in the box. And I wouldn’t know what to do with the beautiful box. But oh I want to be able to hold them:unsure:

None of my ponies are in their boxes because they’re all childhood ones so their boxes are long gone now but what I would’ve done if I got them now would be keep the box safe elsewhere. That’s what I’ve done with blind bag ponies packaging anyway
All little kid me did was rip off that box to get to the pony

If you want to unbox yours I’d say go for it. They’re your ponies! Since you seem to like the boxes a lot, try to be as careful as possible because if you ever want them back in the box, you would still have the box and could get them back in again

It really comes down to what you want out of your collection. Are you a collector who collects to preserve the pony and keep its value? Or are you a collector who just wants to love and enjoy and play with your ponies and the future value isn’t as important to you?

If your the second, then open them up and enjoy the heck out of the pristine ponies. Otherwise you may want to keep them sealed in box to keep their value.

For myself, I tend to “rescue” any pony I see while thrifting so I eventually gain all the ponies anyhow. So I do already have boxed and unboxed BF ponies in my collection this way.

Thank you all for your replies :) I keep my collection without the direct intention of selling, just for my enjoyment of their beauty and nostalgia. With the Basic Fun ponies, it’s amazing to have the opportunity to buy brand new ponies again, in addition to my pre-loved and childhood ones. I need to think about this for a bit. I know for sure I feel compelled to keep my Confetti in box and seek out a loose one, since it’s so hard to find her in good shape, and she is my favorite pony of all time!

Most of my G4 boxes went to the recycling, although I did hang on to backdrop inserts when present and I've kept the boxes for three playsets (for storage purposes in the case of the Wedding Castle and the Explore Equestria Friendship Express).

I've kept the boxes for all my Basic Fun ponies so far, because the boxes are really really pretty. If I buy more, though, I'm probably going to have to toss the plastic inserts and start storing the boxes compressed. I already did collapse the Pretty Parlor's box for storage, since unlike with the actual G1 box it's smaller than the assembled parlor and thus can't be used as a dust jacket.

I don't have any MIB / MOC ponies. I de-box the G3s that are still MIB / MOC and the Basic Fun ponies (I don't collect G4) because I just feel so bad about them being imprisoned in that box. Plus keeping them in the box for decades doesn't necessarily do them any good. I have a few G3s I bought from a collector who just unboxed them for display (they were never played with) and the back card colours or in other cases their clothes imprinted on their bodies.

I do recognise the value of a MIB / MOC G1 of course, so I don't buy them in the first place, as I would never de-box / de-card a G1. But nowadays there are many collectors all over the world and I reckon there will still be enough MIB Basic Fun ponies around in twenty years time, so if you like to display them I wouldn't feel bad about unboxing them. Space is a huge issue here as well, so I don't keep the boxes. I throw away the whole Basic Fun boxes as I can't imagine the BF ponies seeing a significant increase in value over the next decades, but I keep the G3 back cards.

If you want to keep the boxes, collapsing is definitely a good idea. :D

Thank you guys! Once a few years ago, I did de-box a g3, and the elastic from its skirt had permanently stained the body. :( since then, the only mib ones I’ve gotten are the Basic Fun ones.

I total cant keep them in box. I like to touch and play with them.

Personally, I tend to keep them in boxes. It's not really because I particularly want to keep their value, per say, but because I like to replicate the feeling of seeing ponies in the store if that makes sense. Eventually, I want to have a shelf that includes store display boxes and things to replicate that feeling. Unfortunately for me, store displays are hard to come by because I believe most simply discard the displays when they aren't needed anymore. Additionally, like Skybreeze, I will most likely eventually obtain the loose pony from thrifting.

However, I do sometimes eye my boxed ponies and have to stop myself from opening them out of curiosity or wanting to feel like a kid again, so totally get wanting to open them. In the end, they are your ponies, so do what you want with them!

I once tried to buy the display part for the Cutie Mark Crew blind bags because I was buying the last two from it. It was embarrassing because they said no and they need it to restock.

They never restocked.

Maybe some day you’ll be able to come across some displays for your collection. There has to be some people who decided to never throw them out when told to

I think that’s why I like them in boxes sometimes, too, because of that feeling of seeing them in the store and bringing them home and them being completely new, with the new smells and all! Your future pony store display will be beautiful <3

For a while I kept my boxes, the G4 one with Celestia and veterinary Fluttershy is very beautiful but for the most part I don't keep them for space and then,I've begun to prefer keep ponies together in a single big box, with care.
Then also the Funko Luna and Celestia,I still have their boxes.
