Am I a pony snob??

I have always only been into G1, these were the ponies I grew up with and the ponies I love. I know basically nothing about other gens, not even names, but I don't really have anything against them (other than the skyrocketing prices due to their popularity...). I never thought much about it, just figured I stuck with what I knew and just only had an emotional connection to G1 because they were from my childhood. However, I have been seeing ALOT of the 'retro' MLP stuff with vintage ponies on it and I have discovered I REALLY dislike like all of it! I caught myself thinking that I only want 'real' mlp stuff not newfangled reproductions (I'm old, I'm allowed to use the term newfangled). I was actually kind of caught off guard by how much I don't want any of the retro stuff. This got me thinking, am I a pony snob? What do you guys think, is there such a thing or am I just really particular in only liking vintage stuff? Don't worry, you don't have to go easy on me either. I am pretty set in my ways so my opinion is not likely to change anyway. I am starting to think I am like the grumpy old man of the pony world...

I just think you know what you like, from what you're describing here.

The day you start going into threads where others are showing what they like so you can tell 'em their stuff is garbage you get to wear the snob cap. Long as you don't go there, I'd say you're totally fine. There's absolutely nothing wrong with liking what you like, as long as you acknowledge that others tastes will be different, and that does not make them lesser.

I think as long as you are not directly mean or rude to others, that you are not a snob.

Everyone should have comfort in freedom of personal preferences which is simply what you have just expressed. ^___^

I can relate also with the feel of not feeling the newly produced retro style items. It just isn't the same. I find myself ignoring them unless I get a nifty idea to do with them ^-^

If that makes you a snob, then I'm also a member of that club! ;) I don't really care for the retro stuff, either. The art isn't the same and I have no connection to it. If it were OLD art on new stuff I'd probably want it! I don't dislike the new 'retro' style by any means but it's just not what I collect.

I kind of think of it like when I go to other people's houses and they have a different decorating style than I do. Some of it I would not like in my house but I can appreciate their taste and how it appeals to them and their lifestyle. I would dislike it in my home but it looks great in theirs! Same thing with ponies!

I probably could be considered a pony snob too. Although I do have some G3's brought as bait & for my nieces to play with it's the G1's I love purely for sentimental reasons. I grew up with them too.
The new ones are cute but I love G1's ..........CAUSE THEY ARE BEST:ponylove:

Definition of 'snob', courtesy of an online dictionary.

snob
snäb/
noun
noun: snob; plural noun: snobs
• a person with an exaggerated respect for high social position or wealth who seeks to associate with social superiors and dislikes people or activities regarded as lower-class.
•a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people.

To answer your question, unless you're treating other collectors poorly, you're not a snob. ;) At the risk of sounding rude - which is not my intention - I don't understand why you're worried about it. If someone else is going to think you're a terrible person for not liking the retro merchandise:
1.) They're small-minded
2.) They should be happy. More for them!

I wouldnt say your a snob either. People like what they like so what? If they find that offensive they can go somewhere else. I used to just only like G1 but I branched out and I find that I really like diversity more but that is just me.

I agree with everything already posted. Its ok to like what you like. Its important to share the joy with collectors that like other things. After all we are all loving the ponies...maybe not the same ones. Snob, no.

Yeah I might be a wee bit of a pony snob. I do give my better half grief about his X box world of tanks game. But at the end of the day my ponies will endure but his virtual tanks are history when power/internet go out ................ but ponies are best :)

My dh collects so many toys also, but I appreciate everything he loves except the cooking network. When he turns that on I want to scream. He has always been so good about my ponies and even bought me a few.

@tulagirl I feel your pain, my better half is also right in to the cooking channel here too. He is totally obsessed with Gordon Ramsey.

He is pretty good about my ponies ......... but I must say he has never brought me any.

But I live in hope:rolleyespony:

I am in agreement with our fellow Pony Fanciers. Unless you are judgmental or unkind to others because of the things they collect, you are in no danger of being accused of snobbery. We all love Ponies, but because it's a pretty broad franchise, we all have different items that we favour.

Let's face it, there are collectors who want everything in the original packing, people who like only certain gens (I know people are sometimes surprised I actually like G3.5, but only once on another board was I ever treated unkindly over my affections). It takes all kinds, and here on this forum we all unite over our love of Ponies, and accept each others' differences with grace.

I love this board, and all its members.

Even those jerks who hate 3.5s. :winkpony:

Finger slipped and I double posted. I guess I was just raging over people who hate my beloved 3.5s. LOL!

I definitely do not have anything against anyone who loves other gens! Loving my ponies as much as I do, I totally understand how others feel about their own, no matter what gen. I think it is great that there is so many of us out there to make communities like this such an awesome thing to be a part of :ponylove:
