A Ballgown for a Pony (many pics!)

One of THE best movies ever made!

And amazing workmanship on the dress! I can't sew, I wouldn't even know where to begin to make a pattern. Really impressive!

All the credit for lighting and focus and color/tone correction is due my incredibly supportive and patient spouse. Would you believe he only picked up photography as a hobby a few years ago? So grateful he was willing to help me document my silly project!

I had so much fun setting up this little ballroom scene with miniatures and other things I own. With more time I probably would have gone even more ham on it! My only regret is that my string of tiny fairy lights stopped working between the first set of photos we did for the Halloween contest, and this second, more involved shoot. And that the clock doesn't have 13 hours. Oh well! I added one of the Labyrinth holiday ornaments I craft, to compensate. I made sure one of the fancy chairs from Paradise Estate is there for her to break out of her enchantment when she's ready!

Cue "As the World Falls Down"

Thank you both so much! Sewing is one of those skills that's pretty self-teachable nowadays, what with Youtube being a fountain of DIY knowledge. Patience for doing tiny work by hand is *probably* self-teachable too..?

And all the parts are posted! Thank you everyone! :lolpony:

So, this is funny: I keep thinking I need to make a Jareth pony to go with her, and then I remembered I've actually made one before!! At Pony Palooza '99 there was a craft-a-custom contest, and somehow I wound up making a Jareth pony in like an hour without any references to look at. He's... rough, LOL.

(I sure seemed to be into sticking feathers into ponies at the beginning there).

I still have him in a box. I think I could do him more justice now. I'll just go ahead and add that to my mile-long list of pony projects to do.
He is absolutely :star:stunning:star::shock:look at that eye makeup and the feathers are such a nice touch!

thanks a million for the share - especially the wig making :) that was really cool to see how that all was constructed - especially down to making even the movie-correct necklace detail. The puffy sleeves gave away that ballroom scene so I knew instantly your reference and it really came together spot on. Really awesome how now you have made a people and a pony version of that dress :)

You all are too kind! Thank you so much for the nice comments!

I'm glad you enjoyed the making-of! It was interesting to me, what I could and couldn't include in the details. Because the dress was getting scaled down AND warped onto a very different body shape, making the puffs butterfly-shaped as on the original dress just looked strange and didn't translate, so I left them round. But, along with the lower sleeves, the silhouette from the front became kind of butterfly-shaped anyway!

OMGGG THIS IS ABSOLTELY AMAZING!!
Both the pony costume and the one you did for your cousin's daughter look just so incredible, you're super talented!! It's really cool seeing the process of making it!!! The wig idea was great haha

I really want to get into sewing at some point, I cosplay but I buy all my costumes but I think making my own would be so cool so I defo want to learn once I'm older; finished with Sixth Form and have a job and all that so I can buy the fabric and stuff lol, seeing things like this really inspires me more and want to start right away ajgdasgfhfg

Thank you for sharing!! :D

This is absolutely amazing. The amount of detail you’ve managed to put into the tiny dress is incredible. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen Labyrinth but that doesn’t mean I can’t still appreciate what you’ve managed to achieve. Such skill, well done! :winkpony:

I had to google what sixth form is ^^; it definitely does make it easier when you’ve got spare money lol, but I managed to make my first cosplay for around $25 all with hand sewing so you might be able to try it sooner if you want :blossom:

Eeeee! Thank you!! The whole wig idea kept tipping me over with the giggles, it's really ridiculous but it worked out well!!
Sewing is a really handy skill to have in your arsenal. Simple machines can be gotten fairly cheap or even free second-hand, but if you're not ready for that yet, you could see if your local fabric stores do basic lessons, or just watch a lot of youtube! Just have to be brave and enthusiastic and not stress about results for a while. And a

You're makin me blush over here! Thank you so much! ^____^ While I recommend the rest of the movie too, that clip I posted from Youtube is the entire scene she wears that dress, so if you've watched that you get everything I was going for. :lolpony:

Absolutely! There is so much extra fabric floating around the world, you don't always have to shop for new stuff at a store. People are often trying to get rid of their stash fabric and so places like Facebook and Buy-Nothing groups can be great for secondhand shopping. And hand sewing is always going to be useful to learn, whether you use a machine or not. I can't think of any garment projects where I didn't use hand sewing somewhere. :)

Aaaaarrrgh you are literally hurting my heart, @Jellybean ! Your work is incredible and always about movies/topics that I love too! Thanks for sharing these awesome pics and keep it up!!

Um… @Jellybean if you were ever to make the dread pirate roberts aka Westley and Buttercup, they would probably be my most desired customs… totally didn’t name my dog after the movie

This made my day, @Maplemeadow ! Thank you!! So much of what I make is in hopes of delighting other fans so it makes me really happy you love the source material too. ^__^

Taaaaak! I love The Princess Bride so much! Wow, I can already envision those customs in my mind... haha time to add them to my very long list of customs I want to make. (Tiny gravestone with "Jellybean" on it)
Westley is named after movie Westley? That's the best!!!

He’s my man in black and (though I changed the spelling) My Wesley will always come for me. Even if I fall down outside and he’s inside, he made E let him get to me. He can totally be the dread pirate roberts if necessary, too.

He sounds like a little hero!
I hope you don't fall! And especially that no long hills are involved. "Aaaas youuu wiiiish!"
