Hi! New here and I’m collecting G1 and G3 (I think anyway)… question is.. my youngest daughter wants a castle to play with the ponies. The vintage ones are hard to find and I’m not sure I want to splurge on it. Can anyone tell me if the older castle will hold up to play? Or is it more of a display thing? Does the pop up castle fit the bigger ponies?

The G1 playsets durability varies on how much sun and heat they were exposed to. Some are surprisingly strong and others have the hinges broken.
G3s and G1s are close enough in size that the G3 playsets will work for both. If you have Facebook marketplace, the G3 playsets sometimes show up.
Shipping on playsets, from say eBay is all over the place with people likely pocketing extra. One person will ship for $45 and the next wants $250...

The G1s can fit into the G3 Pop Up Castle. Some of the doors might be a little tight but it’s not impossible. Depending on age of child the G3 pop up castle may be best as it’s durable and and a good size. G4 were smaller scale and G1 might be weaker given the age.

I don’t know too much about G1 playsets but the G3 Crystal Rainbow Castle is a beast. Definitely will hold up if you can find one local or shipped for a reasonable price (I had to pick mine up from a random woman in a McDonald’s parking lot 2 states over)
