I've been buying a lot of ponies lately, and so I've been selling a lot of ponies lately too.

I swear I am not an elitist, nor am I collecting purist of any variety. But my face involunatrily twitches when I sell beautiful, mint G1 ponies, and then am told by the buyer that "MY 2 YEAR OLD WILL LOVE THEM!"

To quote Darth Vader: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!"

Kids should have ponies. USED, DAMAGED ONES. Or G3s. Or Magic Message Windy.

 I'll give her my nice yellowed Moondancer instead!!!!! Moondancer in minty condition is so hard to find!!!

Yeah...I get G3s for my 3 year old niece and her mom finds ponies in the thrift store, and I still cringe everytime I visit. Nothing is kept together, and pieces are already lost and I won't comment on the state of their hair. I just want to rescue the G1s in the toy bin that they found in the thrift store, but they're not mine. *sigh*

Why??? There are probably a thousand other, cheaper ponies on ebay that she could have chosen!? Why would she win an auction that is so obviously geared towards collectors?

*Cries*

Ponies & kids

I only really buy bait for my customs and resell anything pony wise that I find that looks really nice so my kids really don't mind the well-loved variety of pony or the G3's - although in their defense the minute you debox a G3 their hair seems to be programed to turn into an unholy frizzball and those goofy little accessories end up in every little crack around here that they can so that's pretty normal for played with toys I think. The only way to really keep their hair nice and all of their pieces together would be to never play with them and to put all of the little bits in baggies in a box somewhere. :D

But yeah I don't think I would pay the extra $ for a minty pony for a small child when just playing with it will get in dirty in under 10 seconds. Your buyer probably just has no idea about ponies being collectible and is just thinking that it's a nice toy for their kids. Or maybe they're embarassed about buying a toy for themselves so are pretending that it's for a 2 yar old?

Many vintage toys aren't considered collector worthy if they're not MIB (Barbie, Hot Wheels, ect)

I'm speculating, perhaps this bidder thought the same about MLP.

In my experience with 2 year olds - quiet toys aren't played with nearly as much as those that are noisey.

And that's why I don't sell ponies on ebay any more. =P

I let my 1 year old play with some of my Mexican ponies. I would never buy a mint G1 pony to give to my kids though.
They can play with my collection all they want, they're toys after all; I just make sure to hide any scissors, glue, paint, pens, pencils, etc. Lately my kids have a sick obsession with my super mint Blueberry Baskets, I think it's the curls that are driving them crazy, lol.

re

I came home lait one night to find that all 30 of my G3s were in the bathtub. Apparently, when I said my 4 year old could play with the ponies my husband took it that she could dump all of them in the bath with her at once... Thats Starcatcher and the one with the long Curly hair too...

Im just graitful the G1 cabinet was spared..

I'm gonna go with this - why would anyone go out of their way to inform you about their 'two year old' if it wasn't for a reason?

I've got that before a couple times, like "Oh my daughter can't wait for it!" It threw me back for a sec then I decided to throw in extra stuff since it was for a kid, or their birthday. And if they wanna pay too much for a mint pony, it doesn't phase me. I give my neices good stuff all the time, too. It does give me pause when I go over there later and see a wing missing or dog chew, but when I jokingly scold them about it I see they really do care and totally enjoy their ponies so I get over it. It's funny when they try to hide the thrashed ponies from me. LOL But for the most part they really do try to take care of them and play with them a lot.

It's like sharing the pony love, man. STart when their young.

But now that I think about it they could be telling us that it's for their kid cuz people like to brag about how much they love their kids. But speaking from what I've seen, 2-year olds don't care for ponies. They prefer more interactive/noisy toys or TV stuff.

or maybe they were hoping you would say "aww, its for your child? Here have a few more...free!"

Not that Im cynical....

I actually had a mom tell me her reasoning for buying one of my more expensive and nicer looking ponies for her 3 year old daughter. Her reasoning was that it looked cleaner and therefore she determined that it was better for her child than some that looked old and moldy. I could see her point of view since I am a mom but I do still cringe when I see the state of some of the more loved looking ponies out there and knowing that the one I sold could end up that way.

Maybe she just got it to use for room decoration, perhaps the child has a unicorn themed room and she wanted something nice and pretty to put on a shelf. Outta reach for a small child to be veiwed and not played with. And who knows, she could be sowing the seeds in a future collector! Heck, I know if I had been allowed to play with my sisters Remco fakie I may not be so obbsesed with them today.

I'd of told her to get the dirty ones, build up those antibodies, don't shield your child from a little dirt! hehe, maybe not tell her but I would of thought it.

Oh how awful! I have had this happen to me - but not with ponies.

I had a MIP Polly Pocket Tiny World playset that I sold on ebay. I thought it would go high and that it would go to a collector. It ended for only $18 and the buyer (who was very nice) said 'my daughter is so excited - she can't wait to get it'. In my head I responded "Argggggggggggggggggggggggh"

Makes me sad. I would have kept it if I had known that was going to happen :(

That's one of the reasons why I hate people.

I believe mint G1 ponies should be preserved for the future. The 'oh teh noes tehr just a toy!!' line gets old. I am sorry, but the last pony retailed more than 15 years ago. I think anyone who is willing to put such a pony at stake just to please an irrational two-year-old, is beig VERY selfish.

I am sorry if that makes me elitist, but such is my opinion. u_u

When I was little I played very gently with my toys. At the age of 9 of so, I was horrified to see my younger cousins bury their ponies in a sandbox!!!

That being said, I know how you feel about losing nice collector quality ponies to people buying for their 2 year olds on ebay! I've been making sure that my nice ponies are only sold to collectors, and save the ones with more flaws to be listed on ebay. ;)
