Help! Filing insurance claim for pony damaged in shipping?

The MIB Rosedust that rowdy_cowgirl won in the raffle was unfortunately damaged in shipping. I haven't seen pics yet, but apparently the box was damaged, and a wing broke off. I packaged it allright, I thought...wrapped the box in bubble wrap and put it in a pretty sturdy box that was used to send a MIB flutter pony to me even...so I'm thinking that box really had to be crushed for the pony inside to get damaged.

So...rowdy has the pony, and I have the insurance receipt. I tried checking the USPS website for more info, and found a form for insurance claims, but it says that the item has to be present to file the claim, but they need the insurance receipt, which I have. First of all, that doesn't make any sense...why would either the sender or addressee have both of these things?? The USPS' stupidity aside, what should we do?

Should I make a copy or send the original receipt to rowdy?

And how much would you appraise the damage for? This was a MIB flutter when I sent it...I wrote the value down as $100, and a MIB Rosedust went for $100 on ebay recently (would it be a good idea to print that out?). I think a flutter pony with the box, but a broken wing would probably only be half the value...maybe just $35-$50 or so...but second opinions on how much would help!

Any tips, info, etc. about filing insurance claims would be greatly appreciated!
