So my bestest friend GreyMei (who suffers through my pony obsession lol) was having me research Steampunk for her own hobby and I became a little hooked. I haven't seen a ton, but it seems like there are three categories to me:
~Victorian art with a technological twist added
~Purely mechanical work (typically functional at least on paper)
~A combination of mechanical with Art Deco/Victorian twists and semi-feasible designs
I *think* Clockwork Steed falls into the last category. She was quite a learning process!
Mwhaha Twinkle Eye of DOOM!
So I caved and had to add two somewhat useless gears on her NDS symbol. They looked shiny....I love shiny...
A long-winded explanation:
She began life as a Gem Blossom dyed with liquid RIT black for an hour. I loved her jewel. Originally her \"symbol\" was going to have large cutouts with mechanics visible within the pony. I took apart a useless watch and filled her with jumbled metal goodness. The stuff is still inside, but less visible with the Eyelets I placed in the holes. Her wings were cut from leather and grommet-ed together to be at least a tiny bit \"functional\". In fantasy land the gears would operate her wing mechanisms. I am an artist, not an engineer, so no she is not functional lol.
My workspace/disaster area:
She has brass, copper, and silver "plating" consisting of apoxie sulpt and aged with black paint. I was surprised at how much the little metal bits added up to, but I think they work well. Check her hair, her bun is held in with a jagged washer, metallic pins, and jewelry chain. I couldn't resist a twinkle eye to match the one on her DS hip. There are soo many little details, I will hush now.

Kudos for those wings -- leather like that is a hoot to punch grommets through.
