I would love to get one started. I have a few book ideas that we could start with, but I'd be open to something someone else is excited to read...I am down for *almost* anything ... what is on your reading list? Want to read it together and do a book discussion? =D

Yes! But I'm a very slow reader and don't have very many recommendations as I only read teenager books lol.

Haha I’m not sure any of my to read books would be on anyone else’s to read lists (for the same reason as october moon)

Hey, I like YA. We could pick a slowish pace. It could be great!
Just list a few books you have been wanting to try, and we can come to a consensus?

I love books and love talking to others about the books I’ve read.

I’m a YA reader as well. I’m not a slow reader per se, but I don’t have a lot of free time to read, so it sometimes takes awhile.

I’m just finishing up a painful read. It sounded like it was going to be good, but it’s terrible. I hate it when that happens.

What I enjoy in books:
Strong characters (especially female)
Strong writing
Apocalyptic/dystopian themes
Animal stories (Black Beauty, Warrior Cats)
Sci fi or light fantasy
Magic is cool
Superheroes are cool
The triumph of good over evil

Favourite series are Hunger Games and Anne of Green Gables

What I have read for myself last was the first 2 and a half of the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children's series. I was really enjoying them and then I just stopped. I don't really have time to read. I read to my son every night and he's into the Goosebumps and the FNAF books. He also like Minecraft books and random YA book series. We recently read The Pumpkin Queen and liked it.

I used to love vampire books and creepy things like that but I don't know if I would like them now.
I honestly don't really know what I like to read, It's never just been a hobby of mine. But I would love to try something new and different.

Maybe I can do it on my lunch breaks.

I am a slow reader too but not for lack of interest, more so lack of time but maybe having something like this would make me make the time cause I do enjoy it. I would be fine with YA if that is what has the broadest appeal. Maybe we could pick something together and see how it goes then if we want to do it again, each take a turn suggesting a book and maybe that would open some new genres and authors up to us? I'm willing to read just about anything. I read the first Miss Peregrine's and meant to go on to the others and never did. I'd be willing to catch up on those or if someone has another recommendation. As far as YA goes, I'd had in my to-get-to-one-day list the Series of Unfortunate Events, His Dark Materials (not sure how YA that is), I've also read one of the Disney Twisted Tales recently, the Beauty and the Beast one and had picked up the Cinderella one to add to my pile, I think it's called So this is Love, and not YA but I've NEVER read any *hangs head in shame* Agatha Christie but I've been wanting too.

Totally not biased at all with Series of Unfortunate Events being one of my favorite series I ever read as a kid
But you should definitely give it a read when you find some time! It’s really fun :D

I love the idea of us doing round robin picks and recommendations.
I have been wanting to read Bravely which is a Disney story about Merida from Brave. I don't know if anyone is into that. It sounds like it might tick a few folks' boxes. It is by an author I adore (Maggie Stiefvater), and I know it is gonna be awesome.

@Cactusflower - what was the painful read? o_O

Do people want to start with A Series of Unfortunate Events? It sounds like several people are into that one.

YA authors I know are good include Tamora Pierce, David Levithan, Maggie Stiefvater, Laini Taylor, Francesa Zappia, patricia Wrede, and Mercedes Lackey.

Eee, this is exciting! I used to do buddy reads all the time with people on GoodReads, but then sorta stopped. I have missed them.

I'm totally down for both of those! I might can double them and read to P. He totally loved Brave. He watched the show of unfortunate events but didn't love it, I thought it was kinda interesting but I felt like it was missing something so I'm sure the books are better!

Y'all are getting me excited!
I've been thinking about this and starting to remember what it is like to think of things for myself! I really like fantasy, fairy, folklore, adventure, and dragons, ghost thrillers (not too scary though) and stuff like that! I do remember reading the VC Andrews series when I was young, kinda weird but I think I liked them.

Fun fact: VC Andrews hardly wrote any of the books by VC Andrews ... the family sold the name. But the early ones were hers, yes. Those ones are tricky, as there is some s*xual/inc*st content some people might find upsetting. I am down as long as everyone is cool with it tho. I like pretty much anything, haha.

This sounds like it's coming together :)

so do we wanna narrow down this first round to one of those? I'm fine with either. Bravely might be an easier first try cause it's just 1 book, Series of Unfortunate Events is several but they're short length I believe.

I've never done a buddy book read, how should it go @darklys since you've done them. Do we try to get our book and start within a week or so and then touch base periodically as we read? We'll probably wanna be a little generous with the time to try to get through it, I can always get about 20 min in on my lunch break but when I'm home reading usually falls to the wayside of dumb chores, although I could and should make the time for myself. I have been thinking about trying to get on my elliptical more too, and I like to read while on there so that could also help nudge me.

I just reread the Flowers in the Attic series last year. I was feeling nostalgic.

I think Bravely is right up my alley.

The book I just battled through is the first in a three part series called The Rule of Three by Eric Walters. It’s terrible.

Okey doke...what if we tried to all have the book by Friday, and then we can do some chapter guidelines with discussion posts (and hide things behind spoilers for people who might fall behind)? I can add more on this when I am on my computer.

I just looked at the book on eBay and I saw some of her other ones too. Porter is interested in her raven series!!

It is a great series.
My favorites by her are standalone: Scorpio Races and All the Crooked Saints, but I love her Raven cycle. Shiver was pretty good ... she hasn't written anything I didn't like.
