I just retrieved my childhood G1 collection from decades in storage and am about to get to work cleaning and restoring my ponies.

I’m wondering if there is a good resource for photos of the original packaging?

I have a whole bunch of original ribbons, mostly loose in the bin with all my ponies, and I’d like to match them up, as well as get correct color ribbons for the ones that are missing. Is there anyone who has documented the ribbons with ponies? I have a few brushes, too, and would like to display them with the ponies they belong to.

I’d also like to style their hair close to the orignal style, and original package would be helpful for that too. Are the wikis fairly accurate about who has curly hair?

Overall my ponies are in great condition! But I did brush/braid/play with their hair a lot so many of them are pretty frizzy! And my favorites are just dirtier than the others.

The FAQ here, the MLP preservation site, and mylittlewiki have already been a huge help. I also ordered this collectors guide to keep track of what I have: https://a.co/d/cmGLw9O

I’m happy to share my collection and restoration progress if folks are interested. I have probably 80-100 ponies (haven’t counted yet!), all G1. I’m not selling them, just cleaning up to display and enjoy again!

I would like to see your restoration progress! I'm afraid I don't know where you could find a guide to original packaging, though. :(

I recently had good luck restoring a frizzy tailed pony with a flat iron on low setting...

that's a LOT of ponies (more than me, i think :p ). i was going to recommend mylittlewiki but i saw you had mentioned it already. besides MLP preservation project & MLW, i can only think of StrawberryReef- but that site doesn't really show original packaging photos. it's mainly all indexes by color, symbol, etc. someone else might know a better resource. best of luck with restoring after all this time!

How exciting! :)

I find mylittlewiki to be pretty accurate with hairstyles, but you're always welcome to ask about specific ponies here, and collectors who have that pony can tell you firsthand.

I'm so glad you find our FAQ helpful! We are always working on building onto it!

I'm sure we would all love to see them and your process as you restore them. <3

For MOC/MIB pics and accessory matching, you definitely want @Chrissytree's accessories site.

My Little Wiki is fairly accurate. My Little Accessories is good too, but it lists a lot of ribbons as white when they aren't, I've noticed. I think this is because it can be really hard to determine ribbon color if the plastic bubble has yellowed, and also ribbons can fade over time. And some ribbons are very pastel, like Moondancer's blue ribbon.

In most cases the backcard illustrations show accurate ribbon colors. Although straight-haired Medley came with a pink ribbon even though they show her with a yellow ribbon. But then her curly-haired version DID come with a yellow ribbon! Straight haired Applejack came with a blue ribbon, curly haired Applejack came with a green ribbon . . . And the brushes / combs changed for all the Year 2 to Year 3 rereleases too.

A surprisingly useful site for finding pics of MOC ponies is Worthpoint, which saves info from old eBay listings.

This is great info! Thank you all so much! My current plan is to focus on a basic cleaning of everyone. As I do that I’ll figure out who I have and try to match the ribbons and maybe keep track in a spreadsheet? We’re looking to move in the next year so I might wait until the ponies move over to their new home to style them perfectly.
