Hi guys! I had a question. I was wanting to put little charms necklaces on my g1 mlp collection (with elastic string or ribbon) and wonder if these would faded or harm my ponies over time.
I just thought it was a super cute idea to give them matching necklaces with charms, and if you guys think a satin ribbon would be better than elastic band. Thanks :)

This is a super cute idea! I think there's a chance of anything that has a color staining your ponies when it's left on them for a long time, especially if you use dark colors. Elastic is prone to dry rot over time, but I think most elastic made for jewelry lasts a pretty long while.
Honestly, I've personally found a lot of ponies at thrift stores and such that have had homemade jewelry on them for YEARS with no harm done. I think you'd probably be safe to make whatever jewelry you want for them, but if you want to be safe, maybe just avoid super dark colors. If you want to be EXTRA safe, your best bet would be using white or undyed string/ribbon, and glass beads, because glass is very inert. I hope you have fun decorating your ponies!

There is a seller on eBay that cleans up ponies and puts little charm necklaces on them. I wonder if they're a member here? Their photos are always nicely done.

I use some clear elastic stretchy bracelet cord to hang combs around my ponies necks. I'll take a picture of the cord roll later and add an edit.

Nothing fancy, I use this.

I’ve seen that seller, their photos and pony styling is so cute and pretty! Every time I see them, it makes me want to make necklaces for my ponies! @faeriefixes I can’t wait to see what you make :ponylove:

I don't think it'll harm them as, to be blunt, they're all plastic at the end of the day. If you used metal charms of some sort obviously could cause scratches, damage, and depending on the metal the plating could rub off. I suggest sticking to plastic beads and charms. This brings me back to getting G2 ponies off the shelf in their little boxes. They came with necklaces :D
Good luck :redheart: would love to see the end result!

ended up going with glass beads- when I said harm, I didn’t mean literally. I collect g1 ponies which are 40 years old and twice my age- they’re antiques (though my aunt hates it when I call them that since she grew up with them lol) and I’m just trying to preserve them the best I can. I wanted to avoid “harming” the vinyl as people have experienced pony wear/ clothes dyeing or warping the vinyl  there are people who have been collecting these a lot longer, some since they were made, so I figured someone somewhere had luck (good or bad) with it! I never got to see g2 and I don’t have any, but it sounds so cute that they came with necklaces. I ordered some glass iridescent beads and charms and I’ll be sure to post once they arrive!

I do beading and the ponies are generally cheaper!
I ordered some pointed gems off etsy recently for fixing G2s and discovered how many sellers (importers?) there are for glass and stone. Its not safe for me to look around. Ponies aren't my only collection.

I used to do beadwork. I have *a lot* of beads. Now they just sit because I have nothing to do with anything I make.

@faeriefixes I look forward to seeing what you got and will make!
