So I just received awesome animation cells from My Little Pony Tales (G2)

One major problem: THEY SMELL OF SMOKE. The plastic part is fine, but the paper reeks like a bowling alley! Since they are animation cells, I can't just remove the paper. I bought them off of Mercari (a bundle for ~$40 + sh) Smoke friendly was NOT in the seller info, nor was it in ANY of the item descriptions. I like the cells, but I wouldn't have bought them if I had known about the smoke. I have not rated the seller yet since this would leave me ineligible for a refund/return. I have contacted the seller to let them know after I took screenshots of the seller bio and item description so they can't alter it afterwards. (My mom was a Lawyer, so I'm always super paranoid about that sort of thing xD)
What should I do? Thank you for your help!

I have read that putting paper items in a concealed tote with dryer sheets for a while will pull some of the smell out. I also have read cat litter works too but I don't know personally. I would think something that has absorbancy would help like a box of baking soda maybe?? Good luck, that's a real bummer.

Unfortunately you may not be able to completely remove the smell. I would try a few dryer sheets in a sealed bag or air tight container although animation paper is rather large. You can also call a framing store and ask if they sell any paper cleaner that might help with the smell.

At most studios back in the day, there was a LOT of heavy smoking in studio so a lot of vintage cells will smell of smoke. I have a few From different studios and they all smell. Some that I even bought directly from the studios themselves.

I would definitely message the seller and tell them to put it in the description of the items as some people are severely allergic to cigarette smell. Personally I wouldn’t return them, once they’re framed properly you don’t smell it. The last ones I took to get framed they do clean up the paper some as well when framing. (I always recommend getting cells professionally framed as they’re an investment and part of animation history, it’s worth it to preserve them. ;) )

Would you mind sending me a quick message as I was looking at buying a few from a seller there too and would like to avoid if they stink that bad. Lol

I agree with the above advice, also, airing them out, if you have space. I use my garage with a gentle fan circulating the air. It takes a long time.

Ok if you don't mind waiting this is method for you
You will need
plastic sealable container that is the right size
Baking soda
Put the items in the container
Put something in between so they don't sick to together
And so the baking soda won't ruin the photo then
Poor the baking soda in the container
And Mark the data you did it depending on how smoke they are
It should take a bout a month in the baking soda
My family have done this many times and it has worked

Thought that might have been what caused it
