What does plastic sizer leakage look like?

It can take a couple different forms. When your ponies get that sort of "sticky" feel that is one way. Discoloration can be a result too as the chemicals react and break down.

Unfortunately a lot of g1s are sticky. I don't know what kind of sticky to watch for. Discoloration is big with g1s too.

The kind of sticky that doesn't wash off with water. If you get it off, it keeps coming back. The pony will also get progressively harder the more it leaks, until it all comes out.

Varies depending on your environment/humidity/the weather/what day of the week it is. It just kinda keeps leaking until it's out.

So when the pony hardens, is it like.... Just hard? And that's it?

Yeah. Plasticizer leakage makes the body of the pony feel very sticky to the touch. Almost like it's coated in honey, maybe, as an analogy? Or a white glue that's JUST started to dry, but it still tacky. IDK. But the stickiness keeps coming back, even with repeated washings. And as mentioned, there are a lot of factors in how long it takes to completely seep out.

And yes, when the pony hardens, it becomes as hard as a rock. Regular ponies have a little give in them... like you can squeeze their rumps, or their hooves, and the plastic will squish, and give, and you can pinch things. A pony that's had all it's plasticiser leak out will not give at all. I have a TE Sky Rocket that's undergone that, and she is a solid brick. I have a Brandy (dog friend accessory) that's undergoing leakage, and... he's just constantly sticky. He's packed away from the others, down in a box in storage, so I've no idea what sort of state he's in right now, or if the leakage has been completed.

It doesn't spread tho right?

I wouldn't have them all pressed up against each other if they're in the sticky stage to be on the safe side. Beside each other is fine but not pressed together. The seeping of the plasticizer could maybe encourage it on non sticky ponies. I'm not sure but I wouldn't risk it when they're really sticky. Basically, plastic is resin with plasticizer added to it to make it soft and less brittle. If they didn't add it the ponies would've been hard and would probably crack or shatter. Over time though the plasticizer will probably start to leach out. First they get sticky and then once it's gone through that phase they often become hardened. This process can be affected by the environment the ponies were stored in. Moisture, temperature, mold etc, all these things impact the breakdown process. Discoloration can also occur but that can be caused by other things as well. The best you can do is try to keep them clean, dry and stored in low humidity.

We see this on G3s as well as G1s. I think I remember someone seeing it on a g4 recently too but I’m not sure. Sometimes it’s down to the batch the pony was made in - I had one G3 who’s been sticky basically since I got her.

I’ve also read that cleaning the stickiness off can encourage more plastisizer to leak out faster, but I can’t find the reference for that now. Dunno if that’s true or not, but I can say that the couple of G3s in my herd who have this problem have not been cleaned more than once or twice and have not visually changed. I’ve had both since new.

Interesting....now I don't have any Mexi ponies but I wonder if Argie's are the same? If they stay gooey...hmmmm....
It's not hard to imagine different countries using slightly different materials/quality/processing, which could all effect the breakdown process.

And what's weirder is that all leaky Mexicans are way softer than not-leaky ones =P But take care just where you put/leave them... it's not uncommon for them to stick onto different surfaces -.-
I don't think I have any that are leaking. What kind of surfaces should I be careful about tho?

I would just not put them on anything that might transfer if they're really sticky. I have the cat that came with the Pretty Parlor who is very wet/sticky and I've got him sitting on a piece of wax paper on the shelf. Not sure if that's a good idea or not but didn't want him goo-ing up my display or leaving sticky residue behind.

Ok. I put paper towel down on my shelf (because its painted) even tho no one is leaking that I know of but I don't care for staining.

@Gingerbread answered, I'll avoid any and everything that can transfer, paper/cardboax (unless you have the patience to be taking out small pieces of them out of the body parts in direct contact -learned the hard way when I left once a pony over a folder... all stuck and pieces in the pony -.-). I've never tried with wax paper, that'll be an interesting thing to do.

I mostly display my ponies on (only varnished, not painted) wood shelves, and it's easy to take them out of the shelves when it's time to dust everything.
