Understanding Ebay taxes

Just recently, I've started being charged taxes on some of my Ebay pony purchases. I'm pretty ticked about it, because there is no where in the listings that state taxes will be added. I've been trying to google answers to my questions and I'm still unclear. My situation is that I'm a Canadian who ships all ponies to my US address where I pick up the packages once a month. Can anyone answer the following questions and help me understand what is happening.

Are taxes charged based on seller address or buyer address or both?

Don't they have to put somewhere in the listing if they are charging taxes?

If a seller doesn't say they are charging taxes, can Ebay collect money for taxes?

How is it that Ebay is the one collecting the taxes? How can they do this?

Can taxes be collected for International buyers or is this only for US buyers and sellers?

Any other Canadians have experiences where they were or were not charged taxes from US sellers?

All of my online purchases since December have had EXTRA taxes tacked onto them of $1-$2. That ON TOP of shipping and fees.... I'm not too thrilled about it either.

It's probably being done on all major business websites.
I saw it happen to me in ArchieMcPhee, Barnes & Noble Website, ebay and Dollyhair. Pretty much every legit business website I've ordered off if recently.

I wouldn't blame the seller at all. It's just a new tax law

This is only a guess, but it is likely based on the purchaser address. I started noticing, years ago, the tax collected by Amazon changed drastically depending on what state I lived in (I've moved across country a few times). It is likely Ebay collecting the tax as part of being a sales site and the sellers probably don't know anything about it, or have any control over it.

Yeah, there was recently a big policy change because a lot of online retailers hadn't been charging taxes, or had been applying them incorrectly. Now online retailers like Ebay, Amazon, etc. are required to collect a tax based on the purchaser's state and sometimes city in the US; I wouldn't be surprised if they set that up for Canada too.

It's based on purchaser's address. eBay automatically calculates and adds the tax on--nothing to do with the individual seller, who doesn't get the tax portion of the payment. (eBay collects / remits that part.) Yes, it is legal in the US, there was a recent case about it. I don't know if this also applies to Canada . . . It might be because your shipping address is in the US.

They aren't charging these fees in Canada yet. I'm changing my Ebay address back to the Canadian address, so I won't get charged. I'm trying to get my final North American ponies and then quit Ebay.

The seller's in the U.S. are being required to charge sales tax, and pay income tax, on all online selling. They are supposed to get it started on mercari, etsy, offerup, and even on Facebook transactions.
