So I'm browsing a local store looking for ponies/pony books...didn't find anything cheap (a salon thingie for $34!!) Defeated, I rounded the corner.

SUNNY SCENT PONIES!!!!!!! I stared in amazement...then snatched up two and ran to my mom. LOL (Here's a moment when Im glad I dont look my age)
She rolls her eyes in an playful "oh no, not again!" expreession and asks how much "$4.99 or so" I blurt out....then flip them over. They were marked $6.99 EACH. Nothing different about them at all. And this isnt a Hasbro price, its THEIR price. We didn't have time to wait in line today to get them, so I'm going back in the morning.

Before I 'pitch a fit' and ask to speak to the manager (our managers at CVS always give the customer the price they want. Photos are free, and merchandise is what they the customer think it should be if they ask for the manager  ) is that fair to mark up the price? You KNOW they're already making a profit off them. Can they do that? Its not some tiny hole in the wall store, its a big name store LIKE Target or Krogers or something.

ARG!!

Every store has a markup, and there can be differences between one store on one side of town and one on the other. Wal Mart makes so much money it doesn't matter. It's perfectly legal, as far as I know.

Yeah they have the right. Its part of how the economy works. That's why KB Toys is usually more expensive than Walt Mart or Target. On the same token, I have found ponies for 2.99 at stores like the Christmas Tree Shop, where they sell end caps mostly.

Technically, they -can- do that. I don't think its very fair, since I think that $5 is almost too much for a pony, but yeah, they can do that. The Kohl's here sells them for 6.99 (ok, most of the time they have a 20% off sign, but -still-!) Try looking somewhere else. They gotta be cheaper elsewhere.

It`s perfectly legal for retail stores to charge as much as they want for products. *works at a retail store*

Yeah. I work at a performance shop. If we sold everything at MSRP, we'd never get any business. That's why we have dealer licenses, et cetera. You buy parts at a percentage of cost, and mark them up so you can make money, but undercut other carriers.

Some stores just can't afford to have a low markup. I know Circuit City has a 100%+ markup on products.

Well that's poo. Thanks for the input though guys! :)

i so HATE that store....grumbles

Wow! Ours is $4.99... most of the time. They seem to fluctuate more than the other stores.

wow guys you dont know when you are well off! Your $5 pony in the US equates to $9.16 in the UK, thats for a basic pony.
Bear in mind you are saying they have a small markup, in the UK they also do that and in some stores are marked up to as much as £6.99 which is almost $13.

Ponies in the US are amongst the cheapest in the world!

You also have to think, Hot Topic's main revenue isn't ponies. They're a side item that they probably had to pay more for to get besides Wal Mart or Target because they aren't in any deals with Hasbro.

Sort of like doing a huge by-in to get price breaks, or just buying the ponies at 10% below cost and doing their own markup.

It's legal, but personally I wouldn't buy ponies from them . . . Everywhere is going to have the Sunny Scents eventually, so why not wait and save a few bucks? :)

I hate when places up the prices :p I only go to KB or Khols if I have no luck anywhere else.

The worst is going some place that sells Sanrio products... they put the prices on the packaging, so it's REALLY obvious when places put a sticker on top of the retail price. It usually makes me not buy anything.

Fair point diet, our minumum wage is around £5.25 an hour, equating to roughly $10 (I cant be bothered to check accurately on that atm!), having said that not everything in the UK is more expensive than the US so its swings and roundabouts really. I collect Playmobil and prices in the UK are comparable with the US.

Taffeta, some Toymasters are off the planet. The one I run sets its prices in line with, or just lower than Argos. As they are franchises the owners can do what they like really, but this does tend to reflect badly on the entire chain :(

It was a guess glor, but as Im well over 17 I was basing it on what I would get, £5.05 in october. 20p out
Im above minimum wage anyway (thank god!)

I just paid 6.99 for each of the four scent ponies I found at Kohls. I was so excited to find them. I figured I could always return them if I found them somewhere else cheeper. And to think ponies used to be so cheap.

The minimum wage is cruel.
I loved buying up ponys when I went to see a friend or two in the US, TRU was so much fun! I am hanging out here waiting for things to loose thier value, its a double edged sword, if I wait too long I miss it if I wait just long enough I catch things before they dissapear at half the price.
