These are the people in my neighbourhood...

I'm super unlucky when it comes to neighbours. Some of you are aware of my issues over the years with noisy neighbours. I thought I had finally entered a period of relative peace in my home until this weekend.

The new owners of the condo above me are renting. The renters moved in on February 29 until 3:30am and they were ridiculously loud the whole time. Our condo has a noise problem. It's a wood framed building and the prior owners of the suite above installed laminate flooring and did not properly sound proof. I didn't waste any time addressing the noise issue with the new renters. I went upstairs the following morning and introduced myself to a fancy looking woman who was clearly wearing heels around the house. I spoke to her about the issues with noise and she stated she was sorry about the prior night and would be mindful of the noise.

Two days later and it's not much better. She must be wearing shoes around the house and/or be one of these insane people who stomp every footstep. I'm going into panic mode. I'm hoping it's temporary while she is settling in, but I'm concerned this is going to be a daily occurrence. I can't keep living like this, I'll go mad. I'm sensitive to noise to begin with, but I keep ending up with crazy people who are excessively noisy. For example, last night the footsteps were so loud that my dishes were rattling.

I've been mulling over my options. I want out of this condo, but I can't buy another condo right now, because my income is too low and I haven't been working long enough. I could rent my place out and try to find another place to live, but there is a housing crisis in this city right now and who wants to rent when you own. Argh. I'm hoping I will be getting the job I've been waiting for since last July, because it will mean I will have to leave for training for 6 months and I will have to rent my condo. It might buy me some time to come up with a plan.

Oh, just to add about a bit about my history with the building. I do not get along with the Strata president. She took over for me as president, because I couldn't deal with her brand of crazy. The Strata receives many noise complaints and they never do anything about them. I have taken my Strata to the tribunal over past noise issues. The point being, that reasonable and usual methods for dealing with this kind of issue will not work in this case.

I'm thinking I'll wait a week or so and give her a chance to settle in and hope it gets quieter, but I may write to her about my concerns or visit her again. Maybe I could bribe her to be a decent neighbour by sending her muffins. ;)

If you have any suggestions for ways I might handle this situation, I'm all ears.

Yes, Muffins would be a nice way to smooth things over...

Depending on your state, if you live in America, You should have the Right To Quiet Enjoyment - or at least you should depending on your State.
Keep in mind there should be quiet hours like between 8am to 7pm there can be construction but no wild parties after 9pm - somethingalong those lines dependingonthe county and district and state...

If your landlord/Strata doesn't do anything you could spend a couple hundred dollars per hour on a Lawyer...

You could complain to other neighbors about the unit above you to find out if they have created problems for anyone else, like loud TV/Music, littering, guests.

Why would anyone wear HIGH HEELS indoors? Usually they are painful especially after a few hours...

Maybe she has guests over...

You could explain the benefits of leaving Footwear at the door to avoid tracking dirt indoors...

Yes, there is a HUGE housing crisis going on right now...

I’m Canadian and I live in one of the most expensive cities in the world for housing.

I own my unit and I’ve already taken my strata to the tribunal which was useless. We have noise by laws here too, but they are not enforced. It’s a horrible situation to find yourself in.

Baked goods might be the only answer.

I’m still all about baked goods with prison contraband slipped in. Can’t be noisy if she’s sleeping. ;p

I seriously hope that you are joking.

You don't know your neighbors Health, so you don't know how drugs/contraband would affect her body nor do you know what other medications she's on so you don't know how drugs/contraband would interact with them...

Also you dont know the exact amount to add, how big of a portion she may have, if she'd generously share the baked goods with drugs/contraband with a child...

I would advise against drugging your upstairs neighbor

Oh okay, lol!

Whew!

In case anyone took your post seriously, and had noisy neighbors, now they've hopefully been talked out of drugging their noisy neighbors...

I know @Cactusflower extremely well and it was entirely a joke I know she, and others would understand given her career.

I apologize if it offended or triggered you in anyway. I also don’t feel anyone here would, in all honesty, even remotely consider doing anything like that. Again, it was a simple (albeit dark) joke not meant to harm anyone.

You have no need to apologize here. The comment was clearly a joke and clearly directed to me. I have no concerns that any reasonable person would misinterpret what you said.

@LittleFlurry a Strata is a board of owners of property, usually condos. You have them in the US too, but some places refer to it as the board. They are usually a group of elected home owners who make decisions on how the property is managed. In my case, they are useless and headed by a nutcase.

After learning about Bronies and FiM P orn - with MLP Fans you never know who is serious and who is joking nor what others are into...

Okay, I apologize for my feeling the need to discourage others from poisoning their enemies.

Thank you for your clarification.

If another gentle reminder and baked goods don't solve it, perhaps you can record the noise from your apartment to show her. She might not realize just how bad it is for you down there.

Is this like a home owner's association (HOA) or more legally binding? To me it kind of sounds like a HOA. They set rules for a set of properties and fine you if you do not follow them. I rented a condo in college in CO and my brother owned one, too. I used to hear the DUMBEST rules like
-can't hang wet towels on the railings of your deck to dry
-have to stick to approved yard/outside decorations
-can't have a window unit AC (FYI-very few rental properties where I lived had any form of AC, so you were usually responsible for getting SOMETHING because CO is hot!)
-can't hang a basketball hoop on your garage
-can't change the color of the exterior of your home to a non-approved color (I think this was a neighborhood my bro lived in later)

We had a neighbor in our condo who used to play his radio really loud at the crack of dawn every day when they moved in. It was sooooo frustrating! Of course it was in the room that shared a wall with our bedroom. We left so many notes and my ex (then-BF) went to talk to the guy numerous times. It finally stopped (I think-was a long time ago) after awhile. However, this may have to do that we also had a ground floor patio area that had mulch in between ours and the neighbors, with fences of course. We would use the area to get up to our cars in the parking lot. Well, my ex started letting our dog go to the bathroom over on the neighbors side in the AM, which was beneath their bedroom window (which they often opened for a breeze). Now, my ex was also doing this because he was also LAZY (I took the dog out on a leash and picked up any deposits) and I told him multiple times that he had to clean it up because it is gross, but why listen to reason. Anyway, the neighbor left a note on our door first and then a bucket full of dog poo in front of our door one day to emphasize that he did not appreciate us letting our dog go over there. I think around that time was when he finally stopped playing his radio loudly every morning. Needless to say, we were not fond of our new neighbors either and they were pretty frosty to us, otherwise.

Voodoo doll! And I'm only half joking. While stabbing it won't hurt your neighbor, it would give you a little fun catharsis. I had one for years that I would pinch or poke when people caused me ire. It reminded me to not take things to heart and gave me a bit of a giggle. It didn't stop my people from being problems, but it took off the edge and helped me blow off steam.

There's a free app called "kick the buddy" that my girl uses to get out frustration.

Do you ever wonder if she ever thinks of you when using it? Just kidding...

If they were really your buddy you probably wouldn't want to kick them...
But yeah I get the concept...

If she needs to, I don't mind. She may be 10, but physical and mental maturity has her closer to 13. With only one parent, she's bound to get mad at me sometimes.

I clean. Really obsessively clean. Like scrubbing floors with a toothbrush when I'm frustrated. I do it until pain makes me pass out, so her way is healthier.

I've got issues. I love having a clean and organised house. (Ocd) I'm just glad my girl is growing up wired a bit more normally. <3
