Seperating Custom Hair

So custom hair comes in long strands tied together with ribbon or rubber bands etc. But how do you seperate it? I got some purple hair off ebay almost a month back or so and was trying to section off a piece for rehairing and all this extra hair came with it and wound up every where all over the kitchen table and the floor and myself. My once nice and neat bundle of hair was almost in a knot. I know there has to be an easier way of seperating it. But how?
