Saving Bowtie: You Can Call Her Coral Now

I just wanted to congratulate you on all the hard work you've done so far and hope that you keep up with the lovely work! Cant wait to see how she turns out!

Seeing the progress on this custom is awesome! Tackling such a baity pony is very brave of you and will definitely make me think twice before binning such a pony in the future - if I ever come across one that bad! ^^

Great work, can't wait to see her finished! :D

Wow, that's some amazing work. You're a fantastic sculpter. I can't wait to see how she turns out in the end.

She's looking great so far! That poor Bowtie... glad you're turning her into something pretty again. :)

Wowie!! She is looking fabulous! Inspires me to finish some of my half-sculpted customs!
I can't wait to see more pics of your progress!!!

Side note, what grains are you using to sand the apoxie sculpt with? Thanks! ^_^

Even without updates she gets encouragement. I should note that I've still been smoothing and sanding. Not much visual progress to report. Sometime soon, maybe? I would really like to get a base coat on her sometime before spring.

Sirenamber, I've been using fine grade. I'll have to check my packaging for the exact grit when I get out another sheet. :)

So love this I keep showing friends! We all think she is coming along beautifully!

wanting to bump this thread 'cause I cannot wait to see how Miss Merpony is progressing!!

OMG! This is an amazing project. I can't wait to see it finished and those thought bubbles are just full of WIN!

Hehe, thanks for the bump! I have ended up totally swamped at work since my last update and, sadly, Miss Bowtie is perched above me, not looking so very different from the last update. I took a couple pics when I put on the first white basecoat, then I saw some flaws so we're back to the sanding and smoothing. And we had some "kitty assistance" at one point, so I had to do some repairs. But hey, I did get the white basecoat on her, so I DID manage that before spring! Just no body color yet... She's going to have some scathing comments for me when I do her thought bubbles. :tongue2:

And to answer Sirenamber's question from months ago, I'm using 220 general purpose sandpaper. ;)

Wow I am really impressed! So far she looks fantastic. Good luck on your project :)

Nah, Star Flare, it wasn't too bad. Now, if I hadn't used Apoxie Sculpt, it probably would have been a nightmare. My kitty loves the wires sticking out...so he clambered up on my desk, knocked her down to the floor, and was chewing on her fin wires. Some were pretty bent up, but no lasting damage.

And,well...hmmm...I think I might have some pictures to share or something... I think I'll let Coral-to-be do most of the talking.

Yeah, it did. Ouch.

Time for some paint!

Soooo, as those pics showed, she got her body colors on. We had the red base, then some orange, then the interference powder layers (red, gold, and blue, if you're curious) and last was oil pastel shading and a Mod Podge/interference powder/water/really thinned down paint mixture (two coats, one in red, one in gold). My camera, as I've found, hates the color red.

Now, normally jewelery and eyes are the last things I work on, but I needed to get these done when I still had some room to work in there. The eyes and ear/muzzle shading aren't 100% yet -- I want to blend those in a bit more, but it'll be closer to the end. And there's eye glossing that hasn't happened yet either. I didn't forget. ;)

She's checking out the progress with the ref pic. :tongue2: There's one pretty big thing still missing, you know? I wonder what it could be...?

FINS!!!

And yes, according to the artist who designed Coral, she was based on a betta fish. I've been dying since I started her to get to the point where the fins go on, and here we are (still wet with glue -- probably way more glue than I needed, but that's between me and my Tacky Glue bottle). Keep your fingers crossed for me...this will be my first foray into Fantasy Film. (Watch me catch her on fire when I go to heat the film. Just watch!)

And as always, thank you to everyone who's been following along. Your comments are appreciated!

What an awesome change from horror to beauty. I'll eagerly watch this to see it finished soon. Incredible what you can do with a bait like this... :)
