IMO thought I’d share about a woman who came into the clinic today with her new puppy, give everyone here a chuckle as well.
This sweet, but clearly stressed out (or maybe nervous) lady came in today with her flipping adorable 11 week old puppy. He is clearly her first pet ever and has obviously doing a LOT of internet reading. For starters she dragged this poor dog into the clinic in his very large dog kennel, the poor thing was clearly terrified. So as soon as she got in she let him out of the kennel and do whatever he felt like doing. Naturally my co-workers and I have him love as she frantically rummaged through her purse muttering to herself then announced “I’m going home I will be right back!” My co-workers and I just kinda looked at her like “whaaaaaaat?” Then she says “I don’t know where his papers are I’m going home! I will see you in awhile!” She goes to leave, remember her kennel and puppy are in our clinic still. She goes to get in her car as my co-worker runs out to explain that she can’t just leave the kennel and her dog at the clinic like that. We told her we’d be happy to watch him if she needed to go but she’d have to sign paperwork giving us permission to do so (mainly protects us if people abandon animals). Long story short she ends up taking the dog with her to go home and come back.
She comes back and goes into the appointment. The doctor talks to her about flea and tick prevention to which she very loudly exclaims “DOGS CAN HAVE TICKS TOO!?! At my son’s school there’s a girl that goes like this” (this is when she starts to twitch her head and arms). The doctor, being a cool dude, says “I think your thinking of ticks brought on from Tourette’s syndrome, and from what I understand it’s an involuntary action for suffers of that particular disease. I’m talking of an insect parasite that feeds from animal and human blood and can carry Lyme disease.” “Okay but can my dog get what that little girl has?” “No. That’s a human thing” the doctor said with a straight A’s a whip face...
I kinda love my job when people who are over the top and just want to do right by their pets but obviously have no idea. They’re just adorable. And they make for a good laugh and story to share. In the end after several of my co-workers and I spent a solid two hours going over EVERYTHING, I think she went home with a new appreciation for the veterinary field and pet ownership. She’s totally someone who knows she’s making a fool of herself and she makes fun of herself for it and I love and respect that so much.
