Okay, so I'm trying to figure out the whole sub-generation thing amid the multiple toyline redesigns going on. I have my own scrambled thoughts on it, but I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas?

So for me, we're still in G4 (not G4.5) because the animation style of the show, the characters, the lore, etc. all remained the same even after the movie toy redesigns. The reason G3.5 is separate from G3 is because they redesigned EVERYTHING -- the toys, animation style, lore, etc. but rolled the characters over from G3 (and there were still a couple of similarities there). The way I see G4 is kind of how I see G1. The introduction of MLP Tales didn't warrant G1.5 because despite totally changing everything in a different TV series, the toy style was the same and it still had that kind of unspoken G1 aesthetic.

So, to me, all these redesigns are just reboots within Generation 4. I'm not sure how to list them in my inventory (like the first toy designs would just be G4, then the movie redesigns would be reboot 1 and the upcoming 2020 redesigns would be reboot 2? Or they would all just be listed as G4 and not worry about specifying reboots, since G3 kind of did something similar after introducing Core 7? I have no idea.) And I guess I just have to wait to see what G5 will look like, because if it's going to be anything like the leaks we've already seen, I almost feel like that's more of a G4.5.

But I'm probably way overthinking all this. What do you guys think?

I agree with you, I think the community jumped on using G4.5 for the redesigned G4s too soon. The newest, drastic redesign of the mane 6 with a new, drastic redesigned cartoon makes way more sense as G4.5 to me.

I’ve been referring to the G4 post-movie toys as reboot or redesign in my collection inventory to help differentiate them from the original G4 design ponies (which I feel the need to do mostly because I have a Twilight Sparkle army and I’ve got to keep track of them somehow). Otherwise, I also mark down the set name (eg. Rainbow Power) to help me keep track of who is who.

I agree with both of you. I've just been calling them reboots. And if Equestria Girls aren't even considered a half or new gen, why should the movie and pony life toys be?

I agree with all of you! :) I am getting very confused by all the g4 toy intricacies, though. It's hard to keep track.
