Sooooo, among my 500 other hobbies, I love fish. I've had up to 4 aquariums at one time. I've had tropical community tanks, betas, and goldfish. Goldfish and betas remain a favourite. Right now I just have one 40 gallon aquarium with cold water fish. Two goldies, two dojo loaches, and one bristle nose pleco.

My one goldfish, Sho Nen, is three years old. A lot of people don't know this but goldfish can live into their 20s with the proper care. Anyway, Sho Nen's tank mate passed away mysteriously last year and I hadn't gotten a new friend just in case there was disease and then I ended up moving... so I thought I'd finally get her some new friends now that I'm settled.

I went to the petstore and picked out two decent sized babies (big enough that Sho Nen couldn't gobble them, some goldfish are cannibals, some aren't) and brought them home. My giant 3-4 inch goldfish was terrified of the two new babies, I took a video because it was hilarious:

Scared Goldfish - YouTube

She literally hid under that floating moss for five minutes before coming out to see the other fish.

She is now ecstatic and following the one calico all over the place! It's great to see them swim together.

Anyway, long story short, the little white one died over night last night :sadpony: I had a bad feeling by the way it was starting to get lethargic. What a shame.

There are luckily no signs of disease in the tank, I am going to do a bit of a water change anyway to be on the safe side. I'm just a little bummed out.

I'll probably wait a month before I get another one to make sure that everyone else is healthy. Ah well. I guess this stuff happens.

Anyway, had to get it off my chest. Thanks for reading!

Here's a picture of Sho nen when she's all flashy:

I'm sorry to hear that! I had a goldfish my son won at a carnival named Klaus for probably 6 years and when he died I was just heartbroken. Mainly I keep Oscars and a few Jack Dempseys, and they too have a long life. They're real sweeties. People are sometimes surprised how attached you can get to fish, but I find them lovely critters.

I hope your remaining fishy pals have long, long lives!

(the video is a hoot, lookit that big bruiser, hiding from the babies!)

Edited because I apparently can't spell 'video'! :D

I'm sorry to hear one of the babies died, but I'm glad Sho Nen and the other baby are getting along now.

Thank you. It was a shame, but you're totally right. I'm glad she's got a friend. It's amazing how they perk up with company :smilepony:

I hear oscars are quite the characters! I've often thought about keeping oscars myself. My friend had one in a fish tank by the couch and whenever someone would sit near the tank it would swim over and hang out, investigate. It also ate from their hand and sometimes would splash and make a fuss around dinner time know it was time to eat

Aww :( sorry to here that :( I have had a similar thing happen to me when I still had my fish tank. Mum said it probably was in a panic because it had travelled in the car & was in a new home, the others were ok though.

My favourite fishes were Googles & goggles don't no what type of fish they were but they were black fish with big bulge eyes :D thought they were funny & cute hehe.

I always found it funny that my fish that out lived all my others was one from a fair ground/carnival game that I won, I did call it Lucky maybe that helped lol. But it was around for years not sure how long but my uncle (loves his fish, has loads of fish tanks, mainly tropical ones) said he was surprised it lasted so long :p. He was my last one left in the end once he was gone I wasn't aloud any more fish. :(

Might have to get some more :D

They are one of my friggin favourites!!!!

SQUEEE!!!!

They aren't as hardy as the common/comet goldfish you got from the fair, but they are lovely. The big babies like blackmoors should have a minimum of 10 gallons of water per fish. So if you have two that you want to live long and grow up to their full potential, a 20 gallon will do, but a 25 would be even better. It seems like over kill when they're babies, but they'll grow fast! :)

The rule of thumb is 10 gallons per fancy gold, 20 gallons per common/comet, because they tend to get larger and live longer.

Let us know if you get some goldies! I just love them!:smilepony:

:D thats them, defo my favs :D hehe. no idea how much water our tank took, but it was very big. Think I am going to have to persuade my boyfriend that we need fish once we get our own place :winkpony: haha

Yeah!!!! And then tons of photos!

Awwh. I'm sorry one of the goldies died.

I have a goldfish I won from the county fair. Although I am not a fan of them due to the large tanks they require, especially this variety. For now he is stuck in a 10G with frequent, large water changes.

Oscars really have big personalities! Mine are bold adventuring types, who have no plants and few ornaments in their tank due to their inquistive digging, I even have to foam wrap their heater to keep them from smashing it! (great game, you grab your heater and smack it against the side of the tank until mom runs in to see what the noise is!). They love to eat out of your hand (or maybe eat your hand if they can!) and they love to 'chase' you. You have to dart back and forth in front of the tank and they desparately follow you. FUN!

I don't like that they sometimes need live food to have a more rounded diet. I hate giving them little bait fish, and feel horrible guilt about it every time. I work with all sorts of animals, and am well aquainted with meeting any critter's dietary needs, but having to give them a live victim... Man. I feel bad about it.

I had an owl a few years ago that I was having the feed live mice to. I LOVED having the owl. She was a barred owl and SO beautiful. But then came feeding time and to this day I feel bad about the amount of mice she ate. I would apologise to the mice, but somehow I doubt they felt better about the situation. Garland (I named her after my mom's high school, their mascot was an owl) still hangs around my house and hoots at me though, so I guess I did good with her.

Anyhoo, ramble ramble. My Oscars, Atilla the Hungry and Lucious Lips (and their tank mate Tagalong Tulu, a Dempsey) are kooky, watch tv with us and get mad if you change the channel they're watching. They'll thrash in the tank until you put the channel back. They're particularly fond of Regular Show and Adventure Time. Great fish! I love my fishies!

(Years ago I had almost 20 tanks up with all sorts of fish and amphibians. Now I just have the one big tank up. I intend to get more running as soon I run electric to my studio. Then what fun I'll have!)

Tikibirds, that looks like a happy goldie to me! I guess it's one of the lucky ones :smilepony:

Evilbunnyfoofoo, BWAHAHAHAHAHA. Oscars and their fun games XD

You know, that's so interesting. I use to work with birds of prey. I specialize in horses, reptiles, and fish, but I love me some birds of prey and parrots.

I only had to feed rehab animals when I worked at the wildlife rehab center. All of our food was frozen thawed, but I know what you mean. You know it's what they need, but that doesn't make it easy.

Also, here's one of the cutest owls I worked with:

Cichlids+getting+to+know+one+another+088.jpg

His name is Sonic, he loves stuffed animals

Aw, Sonic is such a little cutey! I'll have to dig through my files and see if I can find my pics of Garland. She was a big gal, but so lovely and calm. I don't typically work with birds of prey, I don't have the proper licenses. If I find one I send them to a shelter up north in Oklahoma. Garland was just to fragile to be moved so the local game warden turned a blind eye to me having her. He's a good guy.

I typically work with 'death row' dogs, feral domestic cats, fad animals (you know those 'spur of the moment' pets get then hate then dump, like potbellied pigs, micro pigs, pygmy goats, ferrets, sugargliders and such), abused livestock and wounded native reptiles. I have a real affection for tortoises and turtles especially, but dogs are my number one clients. I run a sanctuary out in the woods. I'm super happy here, in the Styx.

I've been getting a lot of hurt crows lately though. My mom thinks it's my Papaw sending me a message.

He probably is telling me to get a better job. :D

That sounds so fun! I want your job Foofoo!

I'm sorry about the passing goldfish. That reminds of me of my little fish from many years go. Ah, I loved them.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your goldie.

I have a Ryukin that is HUGE, I've had her since she was the size of a quarter... now welll shes about 5 inches now... I was cycling a tank and the fish store told me cycle with goldfish then if she survived to bring her back "since theyre gross fish to have, sure theyre pretty but they make a tank gross fast." I was appalled. I love Orandas. We're hoping to get a new tank really soon. Shes stuck in a 30 gal with what were told were goldfish (like feeder fish) ERM yea how about KOI fish... Gorgeous fish BUT Gin is approaching 7 inches and Hiku is hitting 5 inches. We've had them since Gin & Hiku were both was 2 inches when we got them. Even our pleco is huge! If we move I get to get back my old "pond" which is a 100 gal horse trough. Hopefully in about 3 weeks we can upgrade our tanks. My boyfriend will be taking my oddball tank and do whatever he wants breed wise.

Sorry your little one passed. I had two beta they both live to be around 7 years old and I had a 8 year old goldfish that passed. Fish are wonderful pets if you take care of them. Taught one of my beta's a little trick too.

Hope the rest of your fish are ok and your one fish I soo pretty.
