Hey guys. So it's been years since I had to litter train a cat (and I was a kid so my parents did it not me) and neither my mum nor I can really remember how we did it.

Does anyone have any advice/pointers for us? We want to get these little darlings trained so that they can be indoors for the winter, it's starting to get cold out there in the garage.

They should take to litter training naturally, unless they have been living outside. Try setting them in the litter box often, especially after they have eaten. Hope that helps. :)

Yeah, they'll figure it out. ;) After they eat, immediately set them in the litter, and put them in it if you ever see them sniffing around like they're looking for a place to go.

I usually set them in the box and gently move their paws in the litter. They pretty much know what to do after that. :)

Once, my sister had tamed a little stray kitten at her husband's work site. The thing was tiny, and didn't know how to use the litter-box. During those weeks, we kept it one room exclusively, and kept in a large pet carrier with the litter box, some towels, and dishes at night.

While spending time with it, we would notice how she would often mew loudly when trying to relieve herself. We would take that opportunity to quickly place her in the box, and make certain that she wouldn't hop out until after she had done her business.

So just pay close attention to the kitten as it gives off signs (sniffing around on spot, squatting, straining, etc.) of relieving, and get it to the litter box before anything happens. The kitten will soon catch on and begin to do this itself. I'd even say reward it will a good rub behind the ears after it goes to the box itself for the first time.

Your kitten should get the hang of this very soon, so don't stress over this phase too much. Just watch carefully during these next few weeks, and be patient with the process.

Hope that helped!

well there has been progress. They still live mostly in the garage/outdoors right now, but they love coming into the house when mum lets them. The one bolted in when she opened the door and ran straight to the litter box, hopped in and did her business then ran back outside again. We never placed her in it or anything. She watched my cat use it once or twice. Now if they just do it repeatedly we're set for winter.
