Hurricane Katrina Relief Idea for Us Customizers

I thought of doing this myself, possibly on ebay, but I'm not so good at figuring out the intricacies of the legal stuff for ebay.

What if some of us who customize ponies offer a free-standing commission? Basically we auction off a commission and whatever the price goes to, we donate that amount to the Red Cross. Most of us already have the supplies for customs laying around, so we wouldn't really be losing out. Whoever wins the auction then gets whatver pony they want for a custom. Certain restrictions would apply of course; no copying a Hasbro design or another customizer's design, things like that. People like Woosie and Aikarin who can do *amazing* things might want to put some restrictions on how complicated the design can be.

I'm babbling. Does everyone understand what I'm asking? Is it possible to do it? Or is the legal stuff of having a charity auction too complicated? I'm just itching to do something to help, but I'm not really in a position to donate a huge amount of money. All of the news stations are saying NOT to donate clothes or food because there's no way to get it there, what they need is flat out money.

What do you guys think?

EDIT - Auctions starting in the Auction section of the MLPTP.

Wow, that's an awesome idea, I think it would work. So many people are asking what they can do. Wonderful idea.

sounds like a good idea to me! i don't know if i can participate as a customizer because my skills are still so limited... but i will probably end up bidding on at least a couple of auctions. i can think of several customizers i'd love to commission for a good cause. ^_^

I'll do it! I love New Orleans, it's close to my heart because of all the history and hauntings there. Plus my favourite author lives there. At least the french quarter is dry so the history survived.

I wanna do a ghosty/haunting voodoo new orleans pony! Would that be too much?

It sounds like a very nice idea =)

And if you mean that it will be on auction on Ebay that: "Win your own special custom pony - you win and tell us what you want and we do it for you" then I would love to bid =P

I've had ideas of customs for years. Getting them done now (by proffesionals) and knowing that the money goes to help people in need would be a great oppertunity :)

I don't know anything about the legal stuff though...

Desert Rose - That's exactly what I mean. Each customizer who wants to participate would post pictures of past work (with clear notes that these are NOT the ponies for sale).

Someone on the LJ suggested bypassing ebay entirely

FROM yodallama on LJ Community mlp_customs : No they set up a livejournal community, then artists submitted pictures of the work they would be willing to donate to the cause, then they set up time slots for each artist...like they would say "If you want to bid on such and suchs picture, theyre auction will be on Thursday September 1st" and would do like one a day. When that day came around they would make a post listing teh art pieces that person was auctioning off, then the moderator made comments to the post saying "Comment here for *whatevertitle* picture" and then people would reply to THAT comment to bid, that way it was organised by what picture you were bidding on. Whoever won the auction would paypal they're amount of money to red cross and then when they recieved teh confirmation email from paypal they fwded it to the artist. Once teh artist recieved confirmation that the donation had been made they mailed out the art.

Did that make sense? If not tell me and I'll try to make it more clear..it sounds really complicated but it isnt at all. At the end of the auction all the artists just told eachother what they made and pooled it together to post how much was donated in total...I dont remember what it was, but definitely a good amount, some pictures were going for over $100

That would clear out ebay and paypal fees. Only problem is, the Red Cross only takes credit cards, not PayPal (I tried to donate yesterday only to find no Paypal option.)

Now... I need to see if other customizers would be interested in oding this. I'll oversee it, if no one else wants to.

i like that idea, it's a neat way for people to get customs and donate at the same time

besides doing just commision ponies, i think it would be neat to do maybe new orleans themed ponies, or something like that

just a suggestion

how can I help?

This is a great idea. I don't do customizing, though. Need any help in another area? I'd be willing to pitch in. New Orleans style ponies are a cool idea, then each customizer who volunteers could do her own thing and sell those off as well. Just an idea; I could volunteer those at least:)

Keep me posted!

uh, guys? New Orleans just went to the center of the earth (in other words h-e-l-l)... so is there much point getting in the firing line at the moment?

Heck, is there going to be much of the city LEFT after this mini civil looting war? Well done Bush, you've *really* helped out in a crisis (spot the sarcasm).

This isn't just for New Orleans, it's for the whole area. Think of JupiternWonderland who got hit and she lives in Alabama. Skydancerluv84 got hit and she's in MS. This is for that whole area and the people who lost everything, not just one city.

*head desk* duh.. hurricanes don't just hit one place, thanks Silvered! In that case I'll keep going ahead with custom designs/whatever. But I'm already raising money for the UK convention :? could be a bit pressed for time.

I don't think the Red Cross is the best charity to donate to. Any charity whose administrative costs (read, salaries for their executives) exceed the amount of charitable donations is not worth donating to anymore in my eyes.

I am open to this as well though I have a friend whose family I will be assisting directly with any custom funds I make that are meant for Katrina victims. They lost their home and an elderly relative in a nursing home. I also will be donating funds to my company's hurricane relief fund-- they will match every contribution immediately, dollar for dollar. Can't beat that.

And please, I don't want to see any more political statements in this thread, this is hardly the time for bashing the government or anybody else.

We could also raise money to the people we know for fact lost everything such as user names. Because the two pony users have probably lost their collections including clothes and everything else.

Or we could donate to a religious relief group. I've donated $500 to Mennonite Disaster Service. Where there are people who have gone to where the people are getting help already and are helping them as much as they can and will be there to help rebuilding. I personally know people in this group that are working their buts off for this disaster. And they are really good at Feeding, rebuilding and etc.
