A member here asked if I would make her one of my light up ponies...only BIGGER (Styling Size)! Whew! What a job, but it was well worth it! Nan wanted a Christmas/Winter themed pony with greenery, lots of red, and snowshoes. Since this gal is going on a mantle, I decided that each side could have a very different design and she could be flipped around for a new look! This is the result...

Pics first and then you can read the details at the end if you want!

The Making of the Pony:

I have a love-hate relationship with this custom. I learned, after a couple of tries, if you dye a pony red, you have to paint the entire symbol in white and then paint over it in color if you want to see any of it! I started with the candy cane side as I figured painting a striped stick and some ornaments would be pretty easy. HA! HATE THE PONY!

I honestly have to say my design ideas were a bit ambitious for my skill level. I doubted my ability on this one and I had to simplify it a bit and get rid of some swirls I originally planned because it was just too much. Once I got that side done, I felt better about the project. LOVE THE PONY!

Well, then I kind of freaked out and wasn't sure how to start on the snow shoes. It's one thing to sketch them and completely another to paint it on a curvy surface. HATE THE PONY! So, she sat there on my little table, hairless and half done, waiting for me to work up the courage to be the truly great artist that I am! Finally, I painted the shoes and just wasn't digging it. They were hard to see and I didn't like them- super disappointing. HATE THE PONY MORE!

Then, I got this idea to paint a black outline on the shoes! Brilliant! LOVE THE PONY! Encouraged by my own awesome-ness, I painted the greenery we had discussed. It didn't look good but it wasn't from my lack of skill, oh no, because I was now completely convinced of my spectacular abilities. It was just a flawed design. Solution: change the design! Inspiration: snowshoes. Key word being snow.†This dang pony needed snowflakes. Geez, I'm a freakin' genius! LOVE THE PONY!

Well, now there's a new problem of a big glaring blank space on her back leg. HATE THE PONY! Hmmmmm... inspiration: Nan's mantle pictures that she sent me. Look! A moose!! When would one see a moose? When one is wearing snowshoes in the gently falling snow, of course. Therefore, this pony needs a moose! And a moose on a mountain in a full moon near is forest is what she now has! Is it possible to “one-up yourself, 'cause I think I totally just did. LOVE THE PONY!

We originally talked about pine cones but I doubted I could paint them very well. I still wanted to incorporate them and I found some small ones to work into the hair. Do you love it?! I LOVE THIS PONY SO MUCH!

Holy @#%^! That's definitely transcended the 'custom' category and gone straight into family Christmas heirloom!

She's amazing!!! Wow! I'll tell you what you want to hear, Aadra: LOVE THE PONY! And you're a genius.

And she looks SO gorgeous on the mantel. Aadra did such a fab job of coordinating the pony design to my "style" (which includes moose and snow shoes and all kinds of north woods type things). I'll post a pic of her on the mantel once I get the whole setup finished. She looks great up there with just the garland and one or two other decorations, but I'll wait for the full effect.

:bighug: I love her, thank you so much! :stitch_h4h:

You are hilarious! I love the description. And the pony is stunning, well worth the effort I think. Your lighted ponies are so pretty. I love her eyes too. Gorgeous!

How do you do the lights?! She is flat-out amazing!!!!

"I learned, after a couple of tries, if you dye a pony red, you have to paint the entire symbol in white and then paint over it in color if you want to see any of it!" -- Thanks for the tip, because my next one that I'm planning to make is going to be red. :) Nice to know this ahead of time!

She is so beautiful! Definitely a worthy Christmas mantle piece!

I'm still finding red dye in my kitchen. I just want you to know that.
