How much would you pay?

What is the most you've spent on one pony or would spend?

Do you have a budget?

Will you pay over market value for a pony you really want?

I’ve noticed a lot of this recently too. I’m super happy and excited for people who find these ponies and are obviously excited too. Sometimes I think as collectors we can get carried away with our excitement over a big or grail find/purchase.

This is why I mainly stick to being active here more than anywhere else. It may be the hermit inside me but I’m comfortable with all who roam here and know I do have true genuine friends here whom I would do anything for.

The most I’ve spent on a single pony was about $50usd for my Ploomette and I only bought her as a birthday gift to myself when I had some extra moolah last year.

Yes. Although I wish I didn’t have limits, I am a thrifty pony shopper. I look for good deals whenever and wherever I can find them. My Mom and I thrift regularly so there’s always that going for me, I also lurk around other thrifty websites and have gotten super lucky with people selling childhood collections.

No, I don’t like overspending on anything in life (except my dogs apparently). So I tend to keep within market value or thrift around for something less “perfect” and make it my own. I’m happy to re-root or do a touch up here or there. I collect for the pure joy of it and not resale value of it. Yes, I would love to own a MOC G1 pony but mostly so I can relive the joy of opening her up and then keeping the artwork. I LOVE MLP box art and would love to one day just have a bunch of it framed in my walls of a future pony room. #goals

I used to have so many more ponies. It really hit me when I had to pay the debt. Now I'm very choosy about how much and which ponies. I had a Greek pony for $250 and a dark horse custom for $350. Those two are by far the most I ever spent and the greek was one of the first to leave my collection. It does seem that many newer collectors can just keep adding at such an accelerated rate. The only time it bothered me was because my ponies sold so low. I'm just not a salesperson, though. I try to just be happy for all those who can afford all the ponies. I do avoid most of the Facebook groups unless I'm actively looking and only have a small friend group.

To summarize my addled rambling, it does stump me as to how they can, but I try to just be happy for them, since it was my choice to downsize. It helps me that my parents, brother, and sister are so very well off. Maybe seeing them having so much that we won't ever reach puts things in perspective for me.

Out of sheer curiosity I wonder if people use entire paychecks, credit cards or just come from a rich family or just have really super good high paying job

I know atleast a handful spend themselves into debt cause it's a shopping addiction.

Aside from those details that are none of my business, I feel artistic inspiration for customs to make whenever collectors post their rare spendy finds

I find myself inspired by nirvanas

Most I send on pony for myself is $30 and it rarely happens. I need people to buy my customs though

Your customs are epic! We're happy to have a couple in our modest collection. <3

@Skybreeze we love the re-rooting, restoring, and customizing you've done. Simple and beautiful. I think we might have a large number of customs, because I just love their uniqueness. They have low resale value.

If they've got it, they've got it. I'm enviously happy for them. No need to call them rude names, especially if they work hard for their money and thus their hobbies.

I'm not wealthy. The most I spent for a non custom was $40. Yes I have a budget. Ponies above my set price are either waited for, or reluctantly given up on if the prices keep climbing or stay their. I'm still trying to get myself to finally give up on Star Glow, because her prices are climbing towards triple digits.

Well said.

I don't have any social media accounts and never have. Sometimes I feel a little left behind because of it and maybe one day I'll break down and fall in with the masses but so far I feel like the pros outweigh the cons. I don't have any of that added drama in my life or feel like I need to keep up with everyone or any expectations. Don't get me wrong, it can be used for great things but I believe like most stuff people have taken it too far. I also think it's given a generation some sort of narcissistic anxiety and delusional expectations. But let me step off my soapbox....

People often just show all the good stuff and maybe they need to brag cause the admiration of others makes them feel validated but what they aren't talking about is the crummy stuff. We all got crummy stuff, some more than others. No matter how much you polish your life to present to others there is always some crummy stuff somewhere. You don't really know how those people have acquired these ponies and if they have bags of extra moolah laying around, well good for them. It's not my place to tell anyone how to spend their money, I have dropped big bucks on ponies myself but I do try to be smart about it and I don't sacrifice any of the necessities to do so. The most I've ever spent on a pony? Well, 750.00 but in my defense it was "extra" money, see this thread --> http://mlptp.net/index.php?threads/free-rapunzel.112720/

Any other large purchases were often gifts or bought with bonuses, etc. I know it's still money spent but it was often in some way "extra" money. Yeah, it could go into the savings or the 401K but I'm satisfied with our rate of saving and what's the point of working a hard job if you can't treat yourself with the spoils of your labor occasionally ;)

That said, I do have a limit and it's based on the pony. I have turned down ponies I wanted because I felt they were too expensive. Even if I really wanted it, I can't bring myself to spend too much more than a fair price. I don't mind waiting for a deal to come along and honestly those are what people should really be bragging about. I am not impressed by someone who acquires a rare pony by spending a ridiculous amount of money on it, anyone could do that. The people who find a rare pony at a yardsale for 2.00, now that is something to brag about! Those are the fun stories!

I totally forgot about that Rapunzel story!! Oh the memories. <3

I've noticed that too. I try to be happy for them, but its hard when they show off Every. Single. Pony. They. Buy. Really stuff in general, it seems like its "bragging rights" Now, its their money, so I don't judge too much. Just... Curious. I think its one thing if you're constantly finding deals or find stuff thrifting and such, but it is slightly braggy to me.

I've never payed more than $30-ish. I prefer the excitement of finding one at a good deal than sucking up the cash for it. I have $20 extra a week to spend so I either decide to save it or spend it.
