I don't really know where to put this, but I feel like it could generate a bit of discussion. Maybe? Hopefully? I know g1 has its own lore and g4 has its, but there are many gaps and interpretations, so I hope this theory can be accepted with open minds for what it is- a theory/ headcanon. It's a bit of a long read, so enjoy.

They say that ignorance is bliss. There are many tales regarding the founding of Equestria, where ponies who hailed from a tribe of Earth ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns united in a bond of friendship to drive away creatures known as Wendigos…...but they are merely stories. The true history of Pre-Equestrian times has long been lost…..but it is not forgotten.

Long ago, when the earth was still young, there existed only one tribe of ponies. The Earth ponies were a simple, but perfect and beloved race. So cherished were the earth ponies that Genesis- the original Tree of Harmony- desired to protect them and share with them all that it had. From the ground around the tree sprouted a beautiful garden that would serve to contain and protect its precious ponies from the harsher conditions of the world beyond its hedges. This garden came to be known as the Friendship Gardens- where the earth ponies could experience a bond a friendship with the Tree of Harmony. The ponies were issued a very special caretaker- a divine agent from the realm of spirits who was given a high ranking among its own kind, known as an Angel. In addition, the little ponies were granted the gift of communicating with both the divine creature and Genesis, the tree, through the bestowed ability of “mana manipulation”. This ability allowed for the ponies to tap into the spiritual energies that manifested in the ground and grass beneath them through their hooves, and form a direct link to Genesis.

Through the centuries, the Angel caretaker of the ponies was named “Epona” by the creatures that it looked after, as they began to consider the Angel one of them and part of their tribe; as family. As Epona’s love for the ponies deepened, less time was spent in the realm of the spirits. Instead, it devoted the majority of its time on earth with the little ponies it was assigned to look after. One day, the celestial being overstepped its authority and stole Genesis’ seed of divine knowledge that hung from its highest branch that occupied the divine realm- the seed of Veritas- and offered it to the ponies, hoping that in doing so, it could share the knowledge of the divine realm from which it had originated. However, this knowledge hadn’t been meant for the simple design of the Earthling ponies, and the Angel was severely punished for its actions.

Genesis justly sentenced the Angel that the ponies knew as Epona, their protector, to live out its days stripped of their divine status. All access to the divine realm was promptly revoked, and their divine name stripped away and wiped from memory. However, as an act of mercy, a corporeal form had been issued to the Angel in the appearance of ponies they looked after. Genesis allowed the Angel to choose for itself a new name, and the name that was decided was “Eqinox”, for it was now of equal ranking to the Earthling ponies, and been cast into what seemed like a state of darkness, having been separated from its access to the divine realm of light through Genesis.

Furthermore, the pony who ate the seed of Veritas was evicted from the protective Friendship Gardens that Genesis grew. The gifts that were given her by the herd that remained in the Friendship Gardens- those who came to be known as the Tree of Harmony’s treasures, or “Takara” ponies were clothing of the finest quality that would serve to protect her from the elements. And to the little pony, the name of “Lily” was bestowed, and she henceforth became identified as a “Kesil” (stupid one) by Genesis. After departing, she was forced to live in the harsh wilderness, along with Equinox. The earth ponies who remained in the garden continued to be shielded and taken care of by the Tree of Harmony, with continued access to the mana it granted. Genesis decided to name them Takara ponies, for they were the original Tree’s most precious treasures.

But even with the events that had played out, Genesis took pity for its outcast ponies. So, in hope that the little ponies that had eaten from its Angel the seed of Veritas would return to their senses, it made Lily of the Valley grow for the little ponies outside of its garden. It served as a reminder to ‘return to happiness’. Furthermore, the Original Tree made its protective garden and its remaining inhabitants vanish, hidden deep within a magical mist from a Rainbow Forest that Genesis made to grow around it.

As the generations of Earth ponies progressed and formed societies further into the previously untamed wilderness, Equinox remained among them, but renamed itself “Solestia” as a reminder of the light of the Divine realm that it once had access to, from the Tree of Harmony. However, she was soon witness to the unspeakable horrors that came as a direct result of her sharing forbidden knowledge of the divine with the ponies it had so loved.

After having obtained the knowledge from the stolen seed of Veritas from Epona, Lily the Kesil was driven to madness. An earth pony’s body and mind simply had not been created to posses and understand the knowledge of the spirits, at that time. To rectify this, the Earth ponies from one clan of her descendants turned to modifying their forms. Their spiritual third eye was forced open, but they had no way to house the energies they obtained from divine enlightenment, They modified and mutilated themselves through their own interpretation of the divine truths to corrupt them into arcane energies and spells. The horns that lie on top of their third eyes to channel and manipulate the elements of the earth through their minds are a result of their horrific mutilations. Throughout the generations, these ponies came to be known as “unicorns”- shedding their former Earth pony alliance and becoming a race of their own kind. Their higher knowledge resulted in many of their kind becoming scholars and educators, and continuing to warp the original divine magics from the original Tree’s seed of truth to their own, arcane understandings.

From a separate clan of the descended earth ponies came the Pegasi, as yet another case of extreme body modification. The ponies of this clan had decided to steal the spells that had been penned by the unicorns, interpreting them to their own knowledge, and desires of reaching the pinnacle of enlightenment from the source through physical ascension. With their goal being to penetrate the heavens, they invented spells from the warped knowledge of the unicorns in order to grow bird-like wings from their backs. However, the first settlers of the sky and their descendants along with them would learn that the cities that they built in the clouds could never hope to climb high enough to break into the spiritual realm that Epona had descended from.

Solestia herself had also fallen to madness, though she had not eaten of the Tree of Harmony’s seed of Veritas. From the distorted knowledge of the Pegasi and Unicorn clans, in addition to the Earth ponies, she sought to reunite their understanding of truth and take on the role of restoring harmony.

She used her powers to create a rainbow bridge that would allow her to re-access her heavenly realm. Her attempted infiltration was met with severe punishment and a harsher sentence from the Original Tree. The rainbow bridge was confiscated, de-constructed, and only a portion of its remnants was entrusted to the Moochick as the Rainbow of Light. Solestia was imprisoned in the sun, though in her madness, she vowed to claim her revenge on Genesis for all it had taken from her, though she knew not that her fate came as a result of her own actions.

As generations of ponies continued to carry on, the pony settlers who arrived and lay claim to an unoccupied expanse of land decided to name it “Dream Valley”. It was there that they constructed their self-proclaimed fortress “Paradise Estate”, for they knew that the paradise of the Friendship Gardens their ancestors had been deprived of was but a futile endeavor that they could never hope to re-obtain.

Shortly thereafter, the time had come for the Moochick to entrust the Rainbow of Light to the ponies once again. It had been used for good, defeating the evil that sought to disrupt the peaceful lives of the ponies who resided in Dream Valley, until finally, it had been entrusted by Megan to Baby Moondancer, and passed down unto her own offspring. That is, until it wound up in the hooves of a little pony named Faust, from the tribe of unicorns. The studious pony had power over many ancient texts and lore from tribes of unicorns, Pegasi, and Earth ponies alike. Her thirst for knowledge was unquenchable. Her magic, also, unrivaled. And with it, she used her talents to acquire both the magical, mana-manipulating abilities of the original Earth ponies, and the flight-related magic of Pegasi. With her combined strength of all three pony clans, she used her unicorn magic to forge from the Rainbow of Light a new power; for she hoped that in doing so, she would succeed in creating a new Tree of Harmony, to usher in a new age of peace and unification for all ponykind. The Rainbow of Light was buried and dutifully maintained. The little pony remained diligent, hopeful for the many years, single-hoofedly pouring mana from the earth into the rainbow. She planted other trees, in hopes that they could keep the slumbering Rainbow of Light company, and the grove eventually became a forest, which was named the Mastificent Forest (now known as Everfree). From the forest, mysterious gnome-like creatures that called themselves “Dell Dwelllers” came to reside, taking up residence beneath the forest floor, and acting as caretakers of the forest, and maintaining balance and order.

One fateful day, the little pony was rewarded with a tender, green sapling from where the rainbow had been buried. And eventually, from that shoot grew a massive tree that bore a single seed. While the little Alicorn that cared for the new Tree of Harmony had grown up, grown old, and perished from the earth, the seed on the tree remained, waiting for generations until the right pony would come along. Waiting until there could be someone, pony or beast, who would continue to carry out the hopes and dreams of unification that its Alicorn friend had desperately poured into it.

Lily, the Kesil had sought after this new Tree of Harmony, watching it, keeping it company long after the Alicorn that had grown it was no more. She made her home in its branches, and talked to it. Until one day….one fateful day…..a pony named Starswirl happened to hear Lily’s voice and chance upon the tree. As this was the first presence that had sought out the Tree of Harmony, Lily, for the sake of her own amusement, gave the seed to Starswirl. The three that bore it was beginning to die, as its stored mana reserves from the little Alicorn pony that had fed it had been depleted. Neither could the Dell Dwellers hope to keep this one tree sustained, as the others.

With the seed, Starswirl departed, and he, too grew aged over time. He became legend for his magical prowess, and befriended a group of legendary ponies. With their combined strengths and desires, they imbued the seed with a wish that would benefit generations of ponies yet to come- one of hope and unification of their races, as had been wished for before. And as that seed was planted anew, in the same spot as before…...a descendant from the tribe of Alicorns was born- two sisters- one from the clan that worshiped the angel, Solestia, who was named “Celestia” after the deity; and the other only half sibling to her- born from the clan who worshiped the eclipsed sun, and she was named “Lumina”.

And the rest, as they say....is history.

Wow. Definitely not what I would come up with, personally. I'm not a fan of the takara ponies, though. Where would g3 fit in? I only read it twice. It works in it's own way.

well, since the theory flos as normal from that point on, and follows g4's timeline, from when Starswirl found the alicorns and mentored the sisters (according to show cannon, and the Journal of the Two Sisters), I figure that since the mystery of who originally ran the Golden Oak Library in Ponyville was g3's Storybelle, and she had to go into hiding. Ponyville itself was founded by earth ponies, and the land given to the ponies by Celestia (as seen stated in the episode flashback "Family Appreciation Day). Eventually, it became much more than an agriculture time, as parks, and such began to be built, and earth ponies only knew of their kind (as follows the first part of g3. I believe that at some point in "Dancing in the Clouds", earth ponies don't seem to know what a Pegasus is, and Unicornia is also separated by race) So up until that point, at least in Ponyville, the earth pony settlers of that specific herd remain oblivious and ignorant to the existence of other races.

Nicely done.
