It was always my grandmother's lucky day, so I've adopted it. Fear of Friday the 13th or the number 13 is called "triskaidekaphobia" That is a mouthful! Anyway, here's a little from Wikipedia on the origins if the superstition surrounding this day. It only really dates back to 1950's America.

"The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, "originating from the story of Jesus' last supper and crucifixion" in which there were 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before his death on Good Friday.[3][4] While there is evidence of both Friday[5] and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two items being referred to as especially unlucky in conjunction before the 19th century.[6][7][8]"

"According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day, making it the most feared day and date in history. Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business, taking flights or even getting out of bed. "It's been estimated that [US]$800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day".[7]Despite this, representatives for both Delta Air Lines and Continental Airlines(the latter now merged into United Airlines) have stated that their airlines do not suffer from any noticeable drop in travel on those Fridays.[19]

In Finland, a consortium of governmental and nongovernmental organizations led by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health promotes the National Accident Day (kansallinen tapaturmapäivä) to raise awareness about automotive safety, which always falls on a Friday the 13th.[20] The event is coordinated by the Finnish Red Cross and has been held since 1995.[21"

"Rate of accidents
A study in the British Medical Journal, published in 1993, concluded that "'the risk of hospital admission as a result of a transport accident may be increased by as much as 52 percent' on the 13th";[22][23] however, the authors state that "the numbers of admissions from accidents are too small to allow meaningful analysis".[24]

On the contrary, the Dutch Centre for Insurance Statistics on 12 June 2008 stated that "fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft occur when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday than on other Fridays, because people are preventatively more careful or just stay home. Statistically speaking, driving is slightly safer on Friday the 13th, at least in the Netherlands; in the last two years, Dutch insurers received reports of an average 7,800 traffic accidents each Friday; but the average figure when the 13th fell on a Friday was just 7,500."[25][26]"

Just some interesting trivia to put it in perspective..

I think the numbers overrated. My daughter was born 13 minutes to midnight. When I was pregnant with her. I kept seeing the number 13 pop up. I don't view it as overly bad number. (true the stupid shower backed up again and clogged today.) Overall I didnt go anywheres so I was safe. ;P

My baby chicken was kill today and I had a sewing needle which was hidden in the carpet just go a half inch into my foot and my dad had to pull it out and I have been very depressed all day.
At least I can watch Freddy vs Jason and Jason X tonight.

Oo... ouch. Sorry @Ology
This is my first Friday the thirteenth since my grandma passed.

One of my dearest friends was born on Friday the 13th. A fine fellow he is too, if you like mean spirited people who challenge your beliefs and make you think way too hard. Which I do. Which is why I lurve him.

It tickles me knowing he was born on a 'bad luck' day though. :D

Your friend sounds like a fine fellow. We'd probably get along well.

The day came and went without me thinking about it at all. There were too many other things going on. I have never really cared about Friday the 13th. I am not superstitious though. Interesting facts I didn't know @Tak

You'd like him. He's the most knowledgeable person I ever met. I'm lucky to have him as a mentor. Even if he is mean. :D

My dad hated Friday the 13th because an old lady smashed into him back in the 60s and destroyed his awesome sports car. She had no insurance and his wouldn't cover it, so his car was lost forever. Heh... He never got over his poor car's death.
