Downton Abbey Discussion

So, does Anypony else love Downton Abbey? I think the show is just brilliant! We have the 1st 3 Seasons on DVD and are eagerly awaiting Season 4 come January. :)

When I first heard about the show, I didn't think it would be for me, but after I saw an episode I was hooked. Excellent writing and casting, the actors are incredible, and the photography of sets, backgrounds, and costumes is breathtaking.

Who are your favorite characters? I love Mr. Bates, and Anna. If I ever found a woman that looked at me the way Anna looks at Bates, I'd never let her go. We should make Spoilers in white text, so: The way Anna latched on to him when he was jailed, and the way she never gave up, but found a way to free Bates, that's love.

I can't be the only Downton fan here, so lets talk! :smilepony:

Don't worry your not the only one :D I love it too... The house they film at btw is not far from me. My cousin's boyfriend went to work there for a wedding in the summer hehe I was so jealous.

Luckly I just googled which series I am up to hehe, was just about to give away a mayjor plot spoiler hehe.

I like Mr Bates & Anna too :D so cute together hehe. I also like Daisy she is such a sweety feel a little sorry for her sometimes.
Tom is also another favourite & Lady Rose :D (she makes me laugh hehe)

Btw there is a special episode out here at Christmas hehe can not wait :D

When does season 4 come to you?

O btw if you love Downton you should love Poirot & Miss Marple these are my favourites by far I love that era its just fascinates me.

My boyfriend likes Poirot I tried to get him to watch Downton but because he only watched some of season 4 with me he was a bit lost & didn't enjoy it. Told him he has to watch every season then he will love it hehe.

Awesome!

I'd love to see that house.

Season 4 shows on TV here in early January, and the DVD set releases last week of January. I think the set includes that new Christmas episode.

Oh, I do like Poirot. :) Miss Marple, not as much, as I'm not good with mysteries. I do love the period.

Lady Rose is great. Thomas....not so much. :winkpony: I love Mr. Carson, too, and his relationship with Lady Mary. Daisy is sweet. The Dowager Countess is a riot!

The thing about Downton is all the characters are so well drawn, like when Lord Grantham thought he was going to the field with that regiment, I could really feel for him. I don't get the thing with Lady Edith. She's maybe not as flashy as Mary and Sybil, but if I met a woman like her, *I'd* ask her out.

I love the fashions. :) If I had an excuse to wear Coat and Tails every night.... Plus, the British Army Mess Dress uniforms might be *the* best thing for men to wear since the Napoleonic Wars. :)

I agree about seeing the whole thing. I first saw an episode from Season3 on TV and loved it but was lost, so we bought Season 1, and while we were switching between discs 2 and 3, I went on Amazon and ordered Seasons 2 and 3. That was an epic week of Downton! :)

Hehe I mean Tom Branson (the one who used to be the Chauffeur driver) the one that marries Sybil :p not Thomas Barrow he is just evil & is just getting worse it seems.

Mum & me love this era so much we are actually creating a range of jewellery for men like the tie pins cufflinks, lapel pins etc. As mum says everything for the Dapper Gent hehe.

I think the old fashioned style is defiantly coming back into style specially with the suits for men, my little brother & all his friends love going out clubbing in suits they always make up a reason too lol.

Well when you start watching season 4 tell me :D you will b going omg a lot

O and yes Maggie Smith aka Dowager Countess is always funny :D & really good actress in everything I have seen her in :)

Oh yes Branson - I like him too. Thomas, well I keep expecting Bates to throw Thomas from the tower.

I'd love to see the jewelry you and your Mum make, I love jewelry. :) I'd buy an "old style" suit if I had an excuse to wear it, LOL.

Yes, I'll def. let you know when Season 4 starts! Poor Matthew.

Hehe. Lol yeah I am surprised he hasn't yet too :p

We do have some of our Jewellery on Etsy at the moment
https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/awdesignsuk?ref=shop_sugg

Not a lot at the moment though going to focus on it more later our Wicksteads shop which sells afternoon tea items (perfect for this era hehe) & my TeaJay shop is taking up most of our time atm :p

We actually have our Mr Wickstead range starting on TeaJay's with vintage items (this will be the name of all our men's range in the end)

Yeah poor Matthew :( think I missed the last few episodes of season 3 because I was totally confused at the beginning of season 4 lol

Excellent writing and casting, the actors are incredible, and the photography of sets, backgrounds, and costumes is breathtaking.
YES! I've never seen a series with such cinemagraphic eye candy! :ponylove:

An interesting article, if you haven't seen it, that's a real testament to the makeup and costuming, is when they compare the actors in their roles to photos of them in modern clothing: PAPERMAG - Downton Abbey Stars On-Screen Vs. Off-Screen

I can't wait for season 4!! It won't be here until January I think.

I did rather enjoy the "Much Ado about Nothing" kind of relationship between Mary and Matthew, all the quirky ways they interact with each other. I agree with you both though that Anna and Bates are the real heart of the love story. I felt more emotionally invested in their relationship than any of the others.

And Thomas, grr... he and O'Brien just make me so mad. And I can't say I care much for Edith. And her taste in old crippled men LOL.

If I had to pick a single favorite character, I think it would be Violet:

She's just such a wonderfully witty, sassy lady!

All things considered, it was such a wonderful, happy place until the last 3 minutes of season 3. I remember the internet going into an uproar over that, and I can't say I blame them! I really can't imagine how season 4 is going to progress..

Love that article :D there are a few omg no way's in there hehe in particular Thomas, Mrs. Hughes & Sarah O'Brien

Thomas is defiantly so grrr... that you want to slap him. (putting this in white in case you don't want to see) But warning you now there is someone else in season 4 a lot worse, think I actually cried : end of spoiler :p

@ Lollipop. I like those things on your link. :) I think after Christmas I might get a couple.

@Jewel.

That link is amazing. The actress that plays Anna is Gorgeous! She must be my type. :smilepony:

Yes, Violet is really something. I like people like her, you always know where you stand with them. Matthew and Mary fascinated and infuriated me. They wasted so much time!
I love to watch Bates and Anna, and I love to watch Carson. O'Brian and Thomas, I could wring their necks. So petty and small. Interesting that Thomas is Gay, that would have been *very* difficult then. But the way he treats others, there are simply no excuses. The actor that plays Thomas does an amazing job.

Yeah, Season 4 - I guess it's about a decade until the Great Depression? I don't know a lot of British history after the Great War until World War 2. That leaves a few years I guess though, for Lord Grantham to mess up the estate again.

Hehe thank you :D should hopefully have more up after Christmas including more handmade items.

Yeah the actor who plays Thomas is really good, I was actually starting to like him in season 3 but then he went back to being evil even more than before.

Well they are just coming in to the 1920' for season for so I really can't wait till season 1920's is my favourite era :D just seemed like so much fun hehe.
In the very last episode of season 4 (not including christmas special) there is something that amused me alot hehe. Something that Robert Crawley says :D

The 'Great depression' is actually about the 1930's till the early 1940's I think. So I guess they will get to this era I hope in series 6 as I want to see more of the 1920's hehe.

Tbh I think they are going it down on how quick they go through history now because it has become so popular. As Mum said they went way too quickly through the first world war, It seemed a bit too rushed to start with, but now they have started slowed it down which is even better :D

Btw another good program to watch if your not already is Mr Selfridge :D & next season is out in the new year!!!! Can not wait hehe.
Paradise is also good that's on atm on BBC but doesn't beat Mr Selfridge
Really want a Harrods one to come out all the secrets that are behind those doors :D my Nana has told me a few I was like omg no way lol.

It'd be nice if they slowed down a bit. The Great War did go by very quickly. I'll have to give "Mr. Selfridge" a look. My Mom really likes "Lark Rise to Candleford", which just started showing a few weeks ago on the channel that shows "Downton". Lollipop, do you like "All Creatures Great and Small"? We love that one. Of course, it starts in the 30s and goes to the Fifties.

Harrods, the department store? That would be interesting.

Hehe yeah Mr.Selfridge is really good, can't wait for the next season :D

Haven't seen 'All Creatures Great & Small' well don't think I have have heard of it, just googled it and it was made before I was born :p finished not long after I was born hehe. It might be on another BBC channel though doing repeats shall keep an eye out :)

The Hair & Make-up always fascinates me in these, shows how fashions come back round all the time just slightly tweaked :p

I like the fashions and styles and cosmetics, too.

"All Creatures" is really good. It's about country veterinarians working in the Yorkshire Dales. The scenery is so beautiful, and of course there are lots of animals and some rather eccentric folks. :)

Hehe think you would like a lot of our shows then :D specially some of the older ones that have been repeated lately I have been re watching Heartbeat & The Royal lately they are both set in the 1960's so different again but I like it :p (wasn't made in the 60s was mainly made in the 90's to early 00's as I watched it when I was younger :p)

One show you might like (it always makes me laugh) is Darling Buds of May it is the show that made Catherine Zeta Jones famous.
Think it is set in the 1930's 40's can't remember. Don't know when it was made in 1991-3 (mum thought it was early 80s hehe)

I love Downton too! I don't really know why since I never liked period dramas like Forsyte Saga.

I think I'm in the minority here but my favorite character is Daisy.

Anybody seen Bletchley Circle? I thought it was pretty good but it's more of a crime/thriller show. It's on Netflix!

i like it too. I seen season 1 on netflix a while back and then I seen season 3 but missed season 2.

My favorite character is violet. :smilepony: Although I cant help but think of Mcgonnagle when I see her.

on a side note, I also found Doc Martin on netflix and really liked that series too and the 2 movies that go along with it

Season 4 has arrived in the US! :satisfied:

Now that I've seen the second episode, it seems (spoilers below!) things are really rolling along (the first felt like mostly recap / establishing stuff).

It's still not the same without Sybil and Matthew.. but I get the feeling we'll be seeing a lot more new characters to fill the void, so to speak. Thomas Barrow is as obnoxious and conniving as ever--especially now that he has a new partner in crime, Edna. What happened to O'Brien though? They just kind of mentioned that she all but disappeared.. not that I miss her, honestly, but I can only imagine that will come back into play later on, if at all.

Poor Tom Branson, dealing with Edna being back.. she's so very obviously full of malcontent, I can't imagine what havoc she's going to wreak on that household.

It's nice though that even this early on, Mary is starting to come around from her depression over Matthew. There was so much darkness (literally, cinemagraphically) in the first episode that it was nice to see her at least laugh and smile a little in the second. I hope she gets a firm hand over the abbey, since Lord Grantham has already started losing money, again...

And last but certainly not least... ANNA! My heart just about broke watching this last episode. I thought it would be something like Bates walking in on something scandalous, but to have all that happen to her... Poor Anna. D: She's always been one of my favorites, and I really hope there's a way to move on that doesn't involve Bates going back to jail for murder. :/

Spoilers

Oh dear, I fear we are being set up. Did Tom " get off the hook" too easily? And is Mary going to do the in-love-with-an-engaged man thing again,or possibly one-up herself to being in love with a married man? OY.

I love the show as well, can't wait for it to be updated on Netflix since I don't have cable.
I'm not sure who my favourite characters are as I like a lot of them.

Also, Violet reminds me of Mrs. Medlock from The Secret Garden, and she always will be her to me. I saw her in that way before I saw her in Harry Potter.
