Hello! I'm brand new here but I've been collecting since the mid 2000's. I have a Barnacle with a symbol on just his right side. His left flank is completely bare, with no sign of ever having a symbol and no tampering. He's not in the best shape (I bought him that way at a video game/collectable store in Georgia). I just would like to know if anyone thinks this could be a defect, and if not, what it could be? (Also sorry if this is weird! I've never used forums before like this) Thank you!

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong place! I wasn't sure where to post it here.

It looks like pvc breakdown.

Sorry, what does that mean? There's nothing at all on his left flank. It is 100% bare. I can take more pics?

The plastic is breaking down due to age, which manifests as brown spots with a larger brown ring around it. Nothing any of us can really do about it.

Oh, yeah! I understand that. I know he's old and wasn't kept in ideal environment til I got him. I was just wondering about the lack of symbol on his left flank. I've never ever seen that before in g1 ponies

Especially since his symbol on his right flank is pretty much perfect considering the age.

Oh! *facepalms* I'm a dork. Sorry. I have never seen that before. It's possible it's rubbed or faded off. It could be a rare factory defect.

Symbols can be removed easily by scratching them off or even fingernail polish remover. Sometimes a hint of the symbol is left behind due to lack of light hitting the plastic underneath the symbol. Not always though. I have a white G1 that has had the symbols rub off due to age and you can't tell at all they were ever there. She is a perfect blank slate now for customizing. I think that this happened due to poor storage. Poor storage can really cause the oddest problems. Could be factory, but there is no way to prove it one way or the other. It isn't going to increase the value of the pony at all. It is quite possible that he was a favorite and played with very often, maybe a lot of sleep overs too.
