So I got my 5 SW ponies in the mail today...but they reek of cigarettes!! Arrgh! I can't have that in my room!! Is there any way to get rid of this smell?? With five of them, it's overwhelming!

EDIT: First we'll try FantasticFirefly's method...

What's terrible is that the "M" on the container stands for "meat"...

I've personally never had to deal with that problem, so I don't know how well my suggestions would work with ponies....

To clear up other smelly stuff, these have worked for me in the past.
- putting the object in a box or something that has a bowl of baking soda in it.
- putting the object in a bag or box with dryer sheets

Oh, man. SW ponies will be harder because you don't want to bend or scratch the wings.

I personally didn't have any luck with baking soda or dryer sheets (others have, so it's worth trying) but what worked for me was kitty litter. But I burried the ponies in it with their heads off. ^_^

That's not really an option for you, so maybe just put some in the bottom of a bag and set the ponies on top and seal it up. It'll probably take a month or two to get the smell under control, no matter what you try. Smoke smell sucks, big time.

Good luck. I hope you can figure something out. :(

Ilfiorelaluna suggested this one:

In a mild bleach and water solution, just swish your ponies around in it for a couple minutes then rinse them out. It drastically cuts the smoke smell and what ever didn't come out will more easily air out while your cleaning and styling the hair.

Thanks everyone! Hopefully I'll be able to get these little darlings to smell beautiful again!

Ack... I tried baking soda, bleach, dryer sheets, anthing smelly... didn't work. I had them in Ace bleach for a week!

Eventually, I just left them outta the way, and they are not so bad now. It was FOUL the smell they had....

I use a tub (that you can seal the lid on) and baking soda(make sure the baking soda isn't too old).

put a generous layer at the bottom of the tub. stand the ponies in the tub (they have to be completly dry, so you don't end up with rust or mold problems) and pop on the lid. leave it for about a week.

it worked for the ponies I found in the basement of my parents place. and both my parents chain smoked, the smell on the ponies could wake the dead! after though, they just smelled clean.

this is the most gentle way I know of removing smells. :)

Good luck!

Try everything but I have submerged ponys in a box of soap powder before and it is really good.

I have been meaning to try that with my princess buggy canopy, the buggy itself was cured with dryer sheets and Febreeze, but the canopy is very stubborn.

Are smokey ponies more likely to get pony cancer? hehe well anyway when I got my FF minty years ago she had that terrible smoke smell about her but I didn't do anything about it... I simply cleaned her up and popped her on my shelf, these days she doesn't smell like smoke at all

yeah i bet febreeze would work its designed to get smells out of stuff

I don't think so - isn't Pony Cancer caused by high humidity?
Yep! If you live in warm coastal regions, keep your ponies in cool, well-lit, but not sunny rooms. Bacteria grows with warmth and wet and dark.

QuestorStar
your right about how mold grows. :) but- light is also bad for Pony Collections. it will fade colour (most noticeably, pink hair on rosedust or posy, purple in seashell etc)

8) dark and very dry is best storage for a pony collection. If you are VERY concerned about mold, or where you live is damp, you could purchase a dehumidifier. (they are pricy though)

On the cheap end, I save those packets of plastic pellets that come in new wallets, bags, shoes etc. they are made to suck up moisture. :)

Ooh...I see it now...hahaha...

I'm trying the Febreeze on a Tassles right now, we'll see how it works. The smell isn't too bad, so maybe it's just trapped in the hair. I think when "the stank" gets into the plastic, it's pretty much there to stay.

A little off topic, but if your ponies stink like cigarettes, it should be included in the auction description as if it were a huge marker slash across their face. It's just as important!

resurrecting this thread to see if there are any more suggestions or tried and true ideas? we bought a bag of of ponies at the thrift store yesterday for my daughter and they were stinky but probably had aired a bit. I'm super sensitive to the smell since I grew up with two chain smoking parents :(

I tried washing them with dish detergent and tea tree oil but that didn't work and TTO actually smelled similar at the end LOL. I'm not thrilled about coating them in febreze since dd p lays with them. Wondering about putting them in the baking soda or powdered detergent...maybe worth a shot.

I'm particularly bummed because if we id'ed them right the bag included:
Kingsley the pony friend Lion (which my daughter insists is a dog )
a couple of the same G2 ponies
a beddy bye (wrong name?) with the sleepy eyes the one that's hot pink with neon green mane tail
UK lemon pie G1
and a colorswirl pony

most have marks or cut manes tails but who cares for my daughter she certainly doesn't...so just to get the smell out
