*cough* *hack* Getting rid of cigarette smell?

When I saw this thread at the top of the list I did a bit of a double-take! It also occurs to me that I never followed up with what worked to get rid of the stink!

For the group of Summer Wings I believe I was posting about originally, I put them in a sealed tupperware contained with some baking soda in the bottom and let them sit for a week. They smelled a lot better once I took them out, and once they had a bit of time to air out on the display shelf the smell was completely gone!

I hope that helps, caitlyn!

Best thing I've found is leaving the ponies in a bag or plastic container with baking soda for a month. Afterward give them a bath with mild soap. Changing the baking soda after about a week helps too, each week that the pony is in it. Though I tend to put an entire box of baking soda in with them. Between allergies and asthma I can't mess around with that smell at all.

I clean them well and let them air out in the garage. The last bunch I got were SO bad they've been out for 5 months and still stink. I decided to bring them back in and soak them in denture cleaner. They smell pretty good now!

Also, denture cleaner is just awesome for cleaning rust in bodies of ponies. It loosens it up like nothing else!

I've had the best luck with a vinegar/water solution! :)

1. Mix 1/8 cup of vinegar into a 1/2 gallon of water and stir (vinegar helps to get rid of resin and tar, which are the causes of the smoky odor).
2. Let the toys soak in the solution for about ten minutes.
3. Rinse them in cold water and let dry.
*Note: the vinegar smell will remain temporarily but will diminish quickly.

I hope that helps!

:S I am having a smoke smell issue right now. I'm hoping the vinegar solution will work because I'm out of baking soda. Dryer sheets in a bag failed me, and so did oxyclean. :(

My ponies smelled also when they came out of the basement, and all i did was wash them with dishwasher soap and then condition the hair and let them airdry. And no more stinky ponies! :cheshire:

If you try the baking soda method I mention, the ponies MUST be completely dry. Otherwise they will end up rusty/moldy from being sealed tight while damp. You can also place a sheet of paper towel over the baking soda, and place ponies on top so they stay clean, as so the soda doesn't touch the vinyl. Make sure you use fresh soda. A few times that people said it didn't work at all they were re-using soda that had been deodorizing a fridge for a while.

And I've also found that for really stubborn ones, changing out the baking soda weekly helps too. (same can take weeks to "de-scent" enough to join the herd)

A little off topic, but if your ponies stink like cigarettes, it should be included in the auction description as if it were a huge marker slash across their face. It's just as important!
I see it as something worth mentioning to a seller, and requesting compensation for if I receive anything ciggy smelled that wasn't mentioned. When I couldn't bother removing the smell, they typically sell at about 40% less then their non-stinky counterparts.

There is this stuff called Odo-ban. I spray it on my furniture to get rid of dog smell. It works VERY well. idon't know if it would harm the ponies but its worth a try. I found it at home depot by the febreeze

I advise you to check out the tutorials section of this site, it has a how to for getting rid of "smokey smell" as i call it.
