Hey everyone. So I adopted the two kittens orphaned in my garage. Their appointment to be spayed is next Monday. One of them has gone into heat. This morning I woke up to a big puddle of pee soaking my bed right next to my arm. (the dampness touching me is what woke me up)

Now I'm assuming this is due to being in heat since neither of them has ever done this sort of thing in the last few months.

Is there any suggestions on how to deal with this? Besides put them in the back porch until they're fixed or heat is over?

I can't keep them in the house if they're going to pee on things. I don't have a washing machine and my mum is away for the week, which means no car and a very long walk ahead of me to get to the laundromat. I can't do that every day.

Also, any tips on getting the urine out of a mattress?

I have two young cats, brother and sister. At six months old, the female went on heat, and the male started peeing on literally everything – beds, floors, carpets, papers, curtains, tables, the stove – at least once every day. It was very upsetting and we didn't know what to do about him. Then we got him neutered, and a day later he stopped doing it entirely. He hasn't done it again since. I recommend you get that done as soon as possible.

That is likely the reason your kitten is peeing on your bed, but it's not the only possible cause. It's important that you have the vet take a look and ensure they have no illnesses, and that you rule out stress factors (household changes, separation anxiety, bullying, litterbox problems) etc.

I think we used soap water and a Dettol cleaner, which is an alcohol-based antibacterial/antiseptic disinfectant, but there are likely far better ways of doing it.

Here are a few links I found:

Well, both the kittens get fixed on Monday. I've got multiple litter boxes for them so that they have choice if there's a "problem" with one of them.

Hopefully on Monday when they get their surgery and rabies shots they will notice if anything else is wrong with them and can let me know. Here's hoping nothing is wrong, I'm spending all my money to get the two of them fixed.

It's hard to tell with cats what will make them pee on something. Have you trained them to use the little box? I know it might seem silly.. but if they are kind of new to your house, you might want to put the offender in the box every so often so they get the idea. We took in cat in November and we had to do that with her. If you are having problems though, you could try confining them to a bathroom or somewhere else where they won't hurt anything if they pee on it, at least until their surgery. Good luck with your new babies!

Intresting

I've never had an kitten that was not spayed. But my friend had trouble with her kitten a while ago and i wonder if that was her problem she ended up giving it up bc she couldn't figure out what was going on. These are helpful pointers ladies. Thanks so much for starting this topic as well b/c this is a common problem.

The links ladyofthenight gave you are good. I'd try those for cleanup. When you can, and if you have a pet store in your area, you might want to pick up a cleaner specifically designed to destroy the enzymes in cat urine (the enzyme keeps them coming back to mark the same spot) to make sure you don't get a repeat performance once the girls are fixed. I use Nature's Miracle and it works quite well.

As for the peeing, it could mean a lot of things, but make sure to mention it to the vet when you take the girls in to be fixed. Because she's so young it's probably because she went into heat, rather than a medical issue, but good to say something just in case. Female cats can start peeing in odd places when they're in heat.

Now, if she stops peeing in the litter box or is in and out of the litter box a lot with nothing happening, definitely call the vet. It could mean she has crystals in her urine. That's mostly a male cat problem, and not common in such a young kitty, but I want to mention it just in case. My neutered male cat Tanger had them when he was 6-7, he had them bad enough he couldn't go at all. The vet told me he could have been dead in 24 hours if I hadn't brought him in (brought him in as soon as I noticed he wasn't going).

My youngest cat pees in strange places, like under the corner of the fridge and in the corners of the room. I don't know why because he's been fixed since he was 1kg/5 weeks old. He learned the toilet from his mother. I have another cat who lives with him and he always uses the litter tray.

At first I thought he only did it when the two trays were too dirty for his standards (ie had been used once or twice), but I've seen him plonk his butt on the floor and pee when I had literally just given them a fresh tray 1 minute earlier.

Any suggestions as to why he might be doing this? It's definitely not a dominance thing. He's very much submissive to all the other cats. I've tried using **** Off and Feliway to no avail.

Make sure you mention the pee incident to your vet when you take her in to be spayed. Hopefully she is just marking due to being in heat. But as others have said she could have a urinary tract problem and that is her way of letting you know. Use an enzymatic cleaner on the spot something like Natures Miracle. Using a regular cleaner will just set the smell in and it will more than likely come back out later.

I would refrain from letting her out. Keep her in a closed off room like your laundry room or bathroom if you are afraid. In her state she will attract all the males in the area and could end up with FIV or another cat disease. :(

BTW~ I'm writing this from my laptop with 2 cats laying across my arms! So sorry for any typos lol

My Ivory, who is the most submissive of my 3 cats, will sometimes pee on my bed if he's mad at me or doesn't get enough attention. Has anything happened that might make him upset? Does he get enough attention? Cats can be odd little critters sometimes. Have you taken him to the vet to rule out a medical issue? That is the first thing to do.

Update on the kitties.

Shar (the one who peed in my bed) seems to be out of heat now. No more wailing. There's been no more accidents so far, though they still go into the back room at night just to be safe until they're fixed.

When I say I put them out I just mean into the back room. I'm not letting those two go outside because we live on a highway and I've seen too many of the stray cats meet cars.

I talked to the lady at the natural pet store down the street, a friend of my mum's, and she agrees that it's most likely due to being in heat. I'll mention it in the paperwork when I take them in. I don't know if I'll get to talk to the actual vet who's doing the surgery though. I'm not going to a normal vet office to get this done due to the costs. I'm going through the SPCA so I'm not sure how much they'll be able to check up on them, but at least it'll be something for starters and if they do think there's a problem (or it continues once they're fixed) I'll take her to the local vet.

I've got a cleaner that's for pet messes specifically so hopefully that will do the job. All the cats are using the litter box just fine.

thanks again everyone.

I've taken him to the vet for two things: concerns for him being underweight, and the peeing. He doesn't have a urinary tract infection or kidney problems and although he's thin he's not underweight according to the vets (I disagree - he's a Ragdoll. 4kg is way too small for an almost fully-grown Ragdoll, the one breed who is allowed to have a fat flap on their bellies in cat shows).

He's the least attention-seeking of my three cats. I can't bring him into my bedroom because he pees in weird places (last time he peed on a power board that thankfully wasn't plugged in) but I spend lots of time in the lounge room with him. He has a great view, another cat to play with, scratching posts, toys and I actively play with them a couple of hours per day total.
He never jumps on my lap but I sit with him and brush him and stroke him. He literally never seeks out affection, unlike my other two cats. He's quite strange and I sincerely think he might be a little slow.

During the summer I thought he might be dehydrated so I've significantly upped the water content of his food (I give them less dry food, soak their raw meat in water and given them canned food with plenty of liquid) and I think it's improved slightly.

He hasn't always been like this but I can't pin down when it began. There doesn't seem to be any event that triggered it. He's never been sick, he's lived here since he came from the breeder at 8 weeks, he never gets into fights with my other cats, he stays inside and there haven't been any new animals or people.

He does cry for attention at times, which is strange because when I go to sit with them he basically ignores me.

It's upsetting to not know what's wrong with him. He is the sweetest natured cat in the world - he has never once even accidentally scratched or bitten me. He never gets mad. He will tolerate whatever you do to him with only minor escape attempts. But like I said, he also comes across as being somewhat slow, as if maybe he has some kind of disability. I know his breeder very well and none of her other cats are like this.

Awww calico kittehs~! They look so sweet.

Lady, thanks. They are just such pretty cats.

It was so funny when I was making the appointment over the phone "What breed of cat are they?" "Garage cats" "I'm sorry what?" "They are stray kittens who were orphaned in my garage." "oh, I'll put down unknown then"

I'm glad to hear there hasn't been a repeat of the peeing. Oh my yes, they are gorgeous little girls. :D I love calicos. . . . I better, I have one myself. Lol, 'garage cats' I love that.

*Neptune---Hmmm, I'm not sure what it could be. Is he declawed? Sometimes when a cat is declawed afterwards they start having litter box issues. Does your litter have a strong perfume added to it? Sometime cats don't like that. Or has the brand of litter been changed at some point? My Ivory hates it if I change the brand of litter or even if I change which type of litter within a certain brand. Example: I buy Tidy Cats Immediate Odor Control rather than Tidy Cats Long Lasting Odor Control. I better buy Tidy Cats Long Lasting Odor Control or he might decide I need a 'lesson' by peeing on my bed.

We have had surgery and both the girls are recovery well. Thanks everyone for the advice and compliments.
