G1 Basic Fun Retro Ponies: A Collector's Guide: CELESTIAL PONIES and 40th Anniversary

You’re so welcome! Glad to get the info to the people.

Super happy to be on the TP again! My old signature and icon bring back memories

I am not sure about the content of the FB post but... being the one that authored the sign the information is as follows:

- The Purple Playset (the recolored pretty parlor) was not picked up by a retailer. Which in turn means they are not going to be produced at this time (not necessarily scrapped but not being made yet either). That being said, it was implied that they are trying to work on something even more exciting in the near future so keep your eyes peeled! So the main point of the bullet was that something new and exciting is on the way so stay tuned!

-The hesitation for showing the purple playset and the flutter ponies back in Feb. was that no retailer had purchased them yet. This means there was no guarantee they would be made so as to not get people’s hopes up. Unfortunately someone else did end up taking pictures and they made it out there when they were not confirmed.
Hey, no worries! Leaks happen and the FiM show in particular is notorious for it! It's a shame the leak got spread so far before cancellation, but it can't be helped.

Someone posted on a MLP thread on FB that had spoken with the Basic Fun booth asking about Flutters when they would come out. The person at the booth said that, Flutters and Lemon Drop set were canceled. 2nd set of Rainbow Ponies will be hitting stores this August, they also said.

There is an air about the FB MLP pages right now that it could be possible that the Basic Fun Retro MLP line will be ending soon.

Oh that is super sad . . .I was totally looking forward to the flutters

Think this is kinda late, but I came across a 3-pack of CP ponies on Amazon. It contains Blossom, Minty and Snuzzle. No idea if its legit, but the box says Basic Fun in the corner: 3-Pack Collector Set
It's legit, but that's the 2008 rerelease! They did a more limited thing back then for the 25th, but MLP was not selling super well at the time so they only added three rainbows rather than a whole line like this year. (citation needed lol, i was not in fandom at this time)

Oh, these?

At some point I had Starshine from the Rainbow set... I have NO idea where she is >,>

I think so, but I can't be sure. The packaging is so similar though, I'm pretty sure it's the same set but with updated branding to reflect that the company is now called Basic Fun?

Hi! I'm new to my little pony but I've been very interested in starting collecting. I have previously been a vintage Barbie collector (70s through 90s) for years now. But now I'm interested in expanding to ponies! I'm interested in only the g1 ponies as they are the most appealing to me and I LOVE the box art. For that reason I'm mainly interested in collecting moc/new in box my little ponies. After doing a quick search on eBay I was surprised to see very little for sale that were moc and the ones that are were quite expensive (many going for well over $100 each) who would've thought that my little pony would be worth more than most vintage Barbies! I have seen they re-released a few lines here in canada (the originals and rainbow collection at toys r us for $12.99 each) that look pretty nice though not quite the same and I would prefer the actual originals. Anyways I was wondering if I'm looking in the right place (ebay) and if they are generally quite pricey to buy moc? And if there's a website I can go to as a new pony collector to see all the g1 collections, year they were released, contents and how much they are worth/typically sell for. Thanks!

Hello there! You could check out Ponyland Press for information on releases and variations of our favorite equines, and Bluerose’s Pricing Guide is an amazing tool for price checks. :)

P.S. I noticed you haven’t made an introduction post in the appropiate forum. Maybe try giving it a shot?

Welcome to the wonderful and crazy world of MLP collecting.

It is and can very much be an expensive hobby, especially when purchasing MOC/MIB ponies. For ponies, you can generally spend $100+ for MOC/MIB ponies and that price will start you out with the more common girls. It’s not uncommon to see them go for 1k+ for rarer or htf ponies (or international exclusives). Yes, eBay is probably your best bet for MOC/MIB. Other great places to look are your local flea/antique markets, garage sales, Facebook marketplace, online (other collectors).

As for resources, your best bet would probably be My Little Wiki for collection resources. I’ve also found MLP Merch a great resource.

BUT the 35th anniversary girls have been a great addition and pretty close to the original ponies. (Basic Fun did use the official Hasbro moulds to make them. ;) ) So that’s also a great start to a G1 collection.

Thank you so much I will definitely keep my eyes open and check out those sites. And I was reading on here the flutter ponies rerelease was cancelled which makes me sad because they seem to be quite expensive moc

Also this may be a silly question but do the original g1 ponies still smell at all? I'm mostly referring to the candy cane ponies.. I just love them!
