Distressed just makes it look old because the paint is either rubbed off in places or other colors are used to create this unique look. I like it a lot.
In our city there are designers all over the place and they are way too expensive. You have to search for a designer that appreciates your style or you will not get what you want out of the designer. It's crazy the cost just to have one. My mother had one for her home. The lady she picked really didn't like everything my mother wanted and that caused some arguments. My mother is very traditional and dressy with how she decorates her home. She really enjoyed the Country decor that came out in the 90's. The designer felt they didn't go together and that caused issues. I did not ever like the country look at all. The traditional is okay, but I am more of a relaxed person and don't need that. Also it is best to have a degree in this now because, in the big cities most people will not hire you without it and it helps to have prior experience. Use to not be this way, but it really has become a field in its own right. I guess it can be quite lucrative if you go into modern and industrial or even art deco. It seems these are really hot right now. I can't really get into them. Art deco is too plain for me, I find it's lines predictable and non creative, lacking in color. Industrial just makes me feel like I am living in a chicken coop. LOL I can see why someone would like it, but it isn't for me. I don't want a broken sign on my wall that has been turned into a clock...all rusted and uky looking. Baaaaa Modern is okay, but I find the chrome and the black and white to be very lacking in creativity and cold to my inner spirit. It feels too futuristic and space like and not homey. I know I am weird. Industrial bookshelves for example. They are too open on the sides. One jump of a cat on those things and everything you have is going to fall to the floor in pieces.
Here is a good one on modern Art Deco

Here is what I love French Shabby which I feel I can pull my mermaid colors in and it has an antique feel to it, but it is soft, warm and comfortable to me.

And this is more what I am living in right now ROFLOL Just because we have thrown a bunch of stuff together that doesn't go together in our home. We have a lot of antiques though and if we had lots of moola we could really make the house a show place...but not. We buy ponies instead.

I guess it fits me because, I love antiques. Okay so enough on your lesson in decor ROFLOL.
