Hey Ponies,
It's been a long time since I customized any ponies and I don't even remember some of the techniques I used, so please indulge me with your input.

1. What do you use to draw on symbols before you paint? I think I used pencil before, but I can't remember. I'm concerned if I screw it up using pencil over the paint, I'll have to repaint. Suggestions?

2. Smoothing out paint strokes. I can't remember how I did it. Adding water?

3. Anyone ever transplanted an adult pony mane to a baby pony? Thoughts on method? I'm thinking of knotting the hair near the root of the donor pony and then transferring. I'll probably rehair using an older method that I vaguely remember using a needle to pull each strand through from the inside out.

4. Sealing paint. What is your go to for sealing paint and keeping it from becoming sticky? Modge Podge? Something else?

What I'm up to is this, I have a Mimic that I've had for years, whose only flaw is a hair trim. I don't mind her the way she is, but because I love her so much, I think I'd like to see her with her full length of hair. This got me thinking that she needs a baby. I'm thinking of using her existing mane on the baby and then rehairing my adult with Dollyhair.

I invite any thoughts, comments or suggestions on anything here. Thanks,
Cactus

1. I’ve used pencil before. If you’re scared of messing up, maybe try drawing it first on freezer paper and trace it on the pony? It works amazingly for a rough draft of what you would want on the rump.
2. Yep! Watered down paint.
3. Haven’t done that, so can’t really answer :( Sorry!
4. For symbols and eyes, I’ve used matte Mod Podge. The shinier it is, the stickier it dries. If it’s for a full body repaint, maybe try Testors Dullcote? Haven’t tried it either, and I don’t know if you can find it up in Canada.
Hope this helps! Good luck on Baby Mimic!
(Also, quick suggestion: to save you on repainting a whole body, I don’t know how you feel about using a baity Baby Frosting! She’s already green, so you could replace her mane and give her twinkle eyes if you’d like!)

I use a coal drawing pencile

1. I still draw on symbols with pencil after finishing full body repaint. I erase now and then and if things get messy, just paint over it

2. Apply coats of paint as thinly as possible, let each coat dry COMPLETELY before applying the next. If you get impatient and keep adding on while paint is wet, you'll end up with clumps and bald spots.
Takes about 5-6 coats but keep applying until fbr looks solid.

3. You can tie plugs in knots at the ends, dip them in mod podge, let them dry.

4. Testors spray sealant. Once I switched to it, there really was no going back. But Artists Varnish I used for like 12 years. It can get sticky over time though depending on which climate the custom lives in. And the lid sealing itself to the bottle and requiring me to use a nut cracker ir 1 ton arbor press to open it, took the cake for me. I replaced it with Testors.

1. #4B pencil on tracing paper first. Flip the paper, lead side down, onto the pony and trace over it. Then I have a mirror image to use for the other side. The pencil erases OK on the paint.

2. I use a dropper to add water to my paint, about equal ratio, until it's the consistency of milk.

3. I've used styling G3 hair on a G1 baby. I rehaired like I normally do, using the tool.

4. Testors Dull-Cote.

Thanks ponies. I've been busy getting baby Mimic painted up and she's coming along really well. I have to go to the US this week, so I'll pick up the Testors Dullcote, as it's way cheaper across the border. I need to order hair.

Me too. It’s way less fun dragging Dave or Damon across the border for pony pick ups and hunting.

That Testors Dullcote is like $5.79US at Hobby Lobby, but the same stuff and same size at Walmart in Canada is $17CAN. Ridiculous.
