When I first began collecting and learned about the Big Brother ponies at the ripe ol' age of eight, I set my collection goal - to collect all the male ponies Hasbro made. I finally decided to get around to making a complete list of them, and thought I'd share!

A few notes:

+ I am only including ponies. This list won't include male non-pony creatures, such as the pony friends, dragons, Discord, etc.
+ G1 and G2 were organized by set names, but I organized G4 by merch types because there are waaaay too many blind bags to do set names haha
+ G4 is again a little complicated because there are so many re-releases and different versions, particularly with the blind bags. I opted to just list the pony's name under each of the categories that they've been produced in.
+ I may have missed a couple, particularly in the Nirvana category because I'm still fairly unfamiliar with them. Also I've been staring at this list for so long I might have just forgotten one. Please feel free to post additions and I'll add them to the list!

Wait how do you know Noodles and Sniffles are officially male? I kinda figured Noodles was but where does it say it? Also thanks for posting this!

The US backcard for Noodles refers to him as 'Doodles' twin brother Noodles'. Here's a pic of it from My Little Wiki!

And Sniffles is stated to be a boy in the UK comic books! To quote from My Little Wiki:

They are also characters in the UK comic books. Their origin is rather odd. Baby Tiddly Winks drew a tiny pegasus and a tiny unicorn on a sheet of paper. Baby Lucky then found the paper and traced the pictures, making a total of two pegasi and two unicorns. Gusty drew a bassinet and stroller for them. When Baby Lucky wished the two sets of twins were real, and they promptly climbed into their accessories and popped off the page.

In true pony style, everyone took this in stride and simply moved them into the Lullabye Nursery. Baby Lucky named the pegasi Dibbles and Nibbles and the unicorns Sniffles and Snookums. He further explained that he had called the lilac unicorn Sniffles because Sniffles is "a boy's name." (Newborn Sniffles is a boy in the UK.)

Thank you! I always thought it was just headcanon thing rather than canon. :D

Amazing job listing the males!

Just quick info: almost all Mexican ponies were considered male in the backcards (but later "corrected" some to be moms, as is the case with Baby Cotton Candy's history that refers to adult Cotton Candy as his mom).

And while not official males, the Mexican Big Brother fakies.

This is really interesting! I never thought about it enough to realize there were that many male ponies. I also don't know that much about non-US ponies to know which were considered male. I kinda wondered why some were referred to as boy ponies when they weren't the clydesdale style. So the UK, Mexican and Italian boy ponies are known to be from the packaging information or Pony Tales show, I'm guessing? Is that correct?

At least for Mexicans, yup, that's correct. It comes from the pack's info =)

That's super interesting! I speak spanish somewhat confidently so I understand that there are not as many gendered pronouns but rather the language is gendered through articles and adjectives. Is it possible the ponies were meant to be gender-neutral but got labelled masculinely based on the gender of the noun caballo, or the fact that gender-neutral language defaults to masculine?

The UK also has the G1 comics! ^_^

Yup, usually Spanish uses male articles and pronouns as being neutral, but (at least with Mexican Spanish) we can "eat" (omit) them and just use the verb so it's more neutral (the "correct" way: Ella juega afuera - she plays outside. But it's more common to just say "juega afuera" - plays outside).

Went to search a post I made some time ago about the info on the Mexicans I have with this issue of the male/neutral (@fb on the nirvana group):

Relating to the issue about Mexican ponies being male/female, here are the only ones I can vouch for given that I have them in box (somewhat...):

While the Spanish language is really peculiar about female/male words (so you can not confuse them... and using the masculine words as just the neutral form), at least with two they consider them as males due to the ussage of the words:

Watercolor Baby Sea Pony -Acuarela- Salty (pink):
The story mentions it's a "he" ("estaba emocionado", "especial amigo").
salty.jpg

Watercolor Baby Sea Pony -Acuarela- Spray (yellow):
The only neutral one.
spray.jpg

Watercolor Baby Sea Pony -Acuarela- Salty (blue):
Not definite, because uses somewhat neutral ("lindo pony").
salty.jpg

Newborn Twins -Gemelitos- Lat y Tat (Rattles & Tattles):
Not definite, but the use of the masculine word "gemelitos" against "gemelitas" (female) can mean at least one is a male.
lat y tat.jpg

Baby pony Baby Cotton (Baby Cotton Candy):
Also clearly depicts Cotton as a male ("travieso", and "le dió a él otro ramito como bocadillo").

Wow, you have so much great information to share! Thank you so much!

In your opinion, which Mexican ponies, if any, should I add to the list?

It's a little tricky, I'd leave them mostly open to interpretation.

The only ones I can vouch almost completely sure that are males are Watercolor Baby Sea Pony Salty (pink one), in general babies, and adults with no babies (ie: Minty, Blue Belle, Butterscotch, Snuzzle, Peachy, etc. -I always thought of alt. pose Blossom as male-). That they considered adult Cotton Candy as mom makes me think that with all adults with babies (Blossom, CottonCandy, Moondancer) also were thought of as females.
