Bleaching

Oh what a relief. I actually get info from collectors/site that say never touch it, so maybe it's a certain type? I've used nail polish remover and got slightly sick from the fumes, even with the window wide open.

I'm not sure. The kind I use is in the nail polish remover isle at Walmart or Target and says 100% pure acetone. I use only a little bit on a cotton ball or a cotton swab and then I clean the ponies with water and soap afterwards. I even used it once to remove some gum or melted rubber band (I'm not sure which it was) that was caught in a pony's hair. It worked OK.

Lucky haha. Yeah I've heard from other collectors bad things. I'm glad it worked for you! I really hope that and bleach don't lead to problems later, cause used acetone on my Tex.

I've never seen anything that says not to touch it but you can always wear rubber gloves if you don't want to touch it or use cotton swabs. You might want to use cotton swabs anyway when dealing with acetone because it WILL take off symbols/eye paint/blush if you're not careful. But same can be said for magic erasers if you scrub too hard. The only thing I wasn't successful taking off with acetone is extra glue blobs on ponies. On the acetone bottle it says takes off glue but I wasn't successful removing factory glue for some reason. But I also wasn't willing to try soaking the spot.

Good advice! I did use a cotton swab, and a small amount, it still made me slightly sick. But that's just me haha. Yeah I just assume that glue is permanent.

The reality is any chemical may cause damage to a pony (acetone as well, go wipe a G4 with it and see how quickly it damages the pony) and each generation is made of somewhat different types of vinyl, so it’s difficult to say definitively what is or isn’t “safe” to use. My rule of thumb is to use as little chemical as possible when cleaning ponies, thus there is little worry that you are causing damage. If you feel you must use chemicals, I would at least wash the pony thoroughly with soap and water afterwards to remove as much chemical as possible, but that may not stop damage from occurring down the line.

Also, age spots and breakdown in vinyl (what the community unfortunately terms cancer) will not spread from one pony to another. It may appear to spread if given ideal conditions to develop (heat, humidity, low air circulation) but it will not transfer from one toy to another. Chemical traces can transfer however.

Haha yeah G4s wouldn't probably stand a minute of sunfading. I always wash it off right away, and it's such a small amount tbh. I keep hearing different things and it's frustrating cause no one is able to know how to properly clean and prevent things. I had gotten a lot of my ponies from more humid areas, so I think bleaching is ok, cause I'd rather have breakdown 10 years down the line than cancer. I have never heard of chemical traces spreading.

It must not have been too strong, I some on my deep pink Posey, cutie mark, hair, and it never faded.

I have used bleach before but I only leave on for a hour if they have pin dot mold. I try to refrain from using harsh chemicals.

Yeah soaking is a no for me. Just swipes. They say you shouldn't leave it in for than a half hour unless you have reason or something. Most chemicals make me uncomfortable using.
