I'm a G1 collector but I have several G3s from my daughters - two of which (Cinnamon Breeze and Golden Delicious) we got in Disney during the Build-A-Pony era. After taking them out of storage (plastic bin for approx 5 years) - I've noticed that these two feel very rubbery and almost 'sweaty' compared to the store bought G3s which seem to have survived their time in the tote with no negative effects at all.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Yep. The vinyl weeps a plasticizer, which is a chemical used to keep the plastic itself a bit more pliable. The pony will feel almost soft, like it can squish, and the outside is super tacky.

Not to worry, though! Just give them a good scrub with mild liquid dish soap (and feel free to use a nice conditioner on the mane and tail), but don't submerse them in water. You want to be careful to keep the water from getting inside of the pony. However, you can also remove the head of the pony and scrub in AND out so the air will get into the pony to dry it. The water has the potential to cause some ill effects, like rusting the tail washer or creating the perfect environment for fungi or slimy smooze to grow.

I hope this helps!

Thanks Sweet Daes. I've heard of that issue but never experienced it firsthand and definitely wasn't expecting it with the newer ponies. Wasn't sure if the Disney ponies were made differently and that's why only they seem to have this issue but I'll clean them up a bit based on your suggestions.

I've had it happen to the Divine Shine ponies (they are transparent with glitter in the vinyl) and one or two others. One was a white pegasus.

I think it must have been how they made the compound for the ponies, like it was just different enough that the batch that was made from them have this issue. I am speculating, of course, but it makes sense since G3 ponies with these problems are few and far between. I have not had this same issue with any other generation, either.

The plasticizer leakage is not uncommon in G1 and G3 ponies. With the G1s it seems to be more of an age issue, whereas with the G3s it’s a combination of age and it seems some batches are more prone to it than others. I have one G3 who has been sticky since I got her new in store. Aside from the divine shine ponies, you can’t really predict who will have the issue.

Aya, this is the first encounter of 1st gen leakage.

As far as G3, I've noticed it has been post-2006 at the peak of that gen's heyday when they had the most releases (and re-releases) where they likely started to cut corners before the decline.
