Been absent from pony customizing for a lot longer than anticipated.... because I took on a massive commissioned project, to customize some BJD's! (Ball jointed dolls).

The customer owns a couple custom ponies from me, and wanted her dolls done up in my style. She special-ordered doll bases to be hand-crafted over in Japan, through the Angel of Dream business. Even had them sand off the ears of the male doll since that character has fox ears~

She ordered up the doll bases, 3 wigs and 2 sets of eyes all carefully selected for her characters. I ended up with 2 plain white wigs for me to dye with Rit Dye, and one aqua/white wig that was to keep its original colors but to be trimmed up and styled.

The characters/designs that the dolls were turned into, are a anime fox demon character named Yoko from the anime Yu Yu Hakusho, created from the 24 inch male BJD.

Second character, is a original concept created by the customer, the character's name is Ocean Mist, and she is created from a 18 inch BJD.

Ocean has two removable hand-sewn outfits, and two alternate wigs, the aqua wig and a dyed brown wig.

So, now for the dolls~

They first arrived to me...

It was so exciting, I just stared at them for a long time almost afraid to even touch them. ^////^

I started off with the painting, body blush up and face-ups~

I then in-set their glass eyes~

After those processes, I was able to go to town on working on the wigs, then hand-sewing their outfits.

After several weeks of completing all that hard work, it got to time to craft the finishing product, their leather hand-sewn plushie companion accessories.

Yoko's plushie is of his full fox demon form, and Ocean's plush is her dragon companion, Aquarius. He is the dragon that has left that scar that wraps around her arm~ he wrapped her tail around her arm so they'd combine souls. (There's a whole wonderful story behind these two, written by the customer)~

And now, this completes this long project~ I started the project I think the beginning of March. It's taken me approximately a month and a half to do this project.

Now, Ocean and Yoko bid farewell~

Ocean may be getting a full-sized realistic horse custom of her dragon for her to perch up on, so this may not the end of people seeing these~

It's been an honor to have the opportunity to work on such fine dolls. Not sure if I'll ever get this chance again~ so this has been highly cherished.

My next line of work may include a commission for a outfit for someone else's BJD, just an outfit. I won't have the honor of handling their doll, but with shipping complications, I can live with that.

The style of outfit is Japanese punk~

I will say, I miss the custom ponies. I have a partially done Final Fantasy V custom sitting on top of my craft tower, all painted and hair rooted, waiting for its outfit and hair to be styled. It'll be waiting a while longer it looks like~ but I'll go wherever the money and inquiries take me~

Wow, the detail is amazing! Great job!

Lovely work

Ooh, well done, these look great! I'm really impressed by their outfits. ^^

My friend customises BJDs and while I've managed mediocre faceups on mine in the past, I've never attempted blushing. They take a lot of work!

Resin is a different beast to plastic, isn't it? Hehe. :smilepony:

The blush-ups scare me a bit, lol!

Work-wise comparison of this with ponies- the labor is not as challenging or involved as pony customizing.

But the thing that raises costs of this above pony customizing, is the sheer size of the outfits, and the time it takes to fully make these over. Much larger scale than a pony custom.

Reasons I say these aren't as involved, is because the eyes are glass and I don't paint the eye-whites, pupils and irises of the BJD eyes like I do for a pony and the wigs, I don't individually root a full scalp of a BJD like I do for a pony, the wigs are pre-bought and I merely color them with Rit Dye, then trim them up.

However, keeping the wigs on their heads can pose a challenge at times. x3

If you put a thick elastic/rubber band around the head under the wig, it helps to keep the wig on. :) You can also use vetwrap or that self-adhesive bandage stuff! All my dolls have elastic bands around their heads to stop wig slippage (except one who has a silicone wig cap because his faceplate likes to fly off and the cap stops that).

I would try to blush my dolls if I had somewhere safe to spray the sealant - I don't want to risk MSC upsetting my dogs' or ferrets' noses. One day... ^^

I am very envious of your clothes-making skills! I'm pretty naff at it and hand-sew so I take about ten years to make one pair of trousers, lol.

Ah yeah, the aqua wig has a elastic band that I stitched to it~ and all the wigs have the clear plastic caps.

Sewing outfits for ponies for like 8 years got me experience in hand-stitching, with those I started off with simply glueing fabric to the ponies without even hemming anything x___x

So BJD outfits aren't that much of a stretch for me. I just have to invest in pre-existing patterns now and then, to make sure I get the outfit in satisfactory shape. I've never used a single pattern on any custom pony I've done~

I have a second commission right now to do a Japanese Punk outfit for a BJD. Is very fun! Got to design it myself and sketch out a rough sketch for a quote.

a friend of mine would go crazy over the Fox boy.

Good job! :surprisepony: they are really pretty:smilepony: and I like the poses you put them in for the photos, they almost look real!

Squueeee just heard from the customer that Yoko will be getting signed by his voice actor!

The man reminds me of Inu-Yasha a little bit. Very cool project. Those BJDs are not cheap, I'm guessing. Good work.
