My aunt told my mother to tell me (lol) to sell my Disney VHS's because I need money to fund myself to a convention in Spring. Some of them I refuse to sell because the DvDs are in the vault right now, but others I don't care for.

My Aunt claimed that she made a ton of money selling her Disney VHS's on eBay and I just went on eBay and while I see a ton of Disney VHS's listed, I don't see a lot of bids.

What do you guys think?

I see the thrift store stuffed with Disney VHS's and think this may be a no go for quick cash.:sadpony:

I think someone misunderstood something through the grapevine. Or, a "ton" of money is a different definition for her. I bought a bunch of Disney VHS at the thrift store a while back just because I felt like watching them. They were 2 bucks each.

Maybe demand is different in Canada than the US? Maybe she sold them in a large lot to another country? Maybe you should research exactly what was sold, to whom and how much was made before taking further action.

I think you're right. Grapevine is just nuts, but my mother built it up to be such a huge thing, lol:LOL: I did a search for all the ones I'm willing to part with and none of them looked like they were going for gold.

Even if I sell them for 50 cents, I am sure most people don't want to pay the shipping when they can just get them at the thrift store, right?

There was a time that the VHS could go for hundreds of dollars, but that was almost twenty years ago before DVD. Now the VHS are just not very sought after because people prefer DVDs or BluRay. If you have a sentimental attachment to them (which I admit I do, I have all my original Disney VHS) I would hold into them. You just won't make that much, sadly.

HOpefully you'll make your needed lolly from your art. You're quite talented, so I'm sure you'll have plenty of sales!

(I used to do used film sales, back in the day, so Odin knows I loved happening upon old Disney VHS tapes. They were pure profit for me. Dang I got old!)

I definitely want to keep the ones that are in the vault and wont be out for some time. Sitting in the literal starving artist seat I can't afford a DvD spree anytime soon.

I keep pumping out customs and art, but no bites yet :smilepony: I did sell a print the other day though and I have an acrylic on canvas painting I am working on. These are all purchases from friends though. Nothing yet from MLPTP or MLParena. I guess we'll see :)

I have replaced my Disney VHS's to DVD's. (Almost got all the disney classics, so happy!!:satisfied:). Some of the dub that was in my childhood has been re-dubbed(like Bambi) so my father has with some machine make the old VHS into DVD and I have the old dubs :) yay! (and DVD has new scenes blaah :( ). All the old VHS I have trown to trash. Nowdays I think the VHS aren't worth nothing because all movies are re-maked to DVD and then to blue-ray. SO I would say you don't make money with VHS (so keep them all to yourself if you like them ;D)

This is quite a familiar topic for me since I still collect VHS tapes. :satisfied:

This reminds me of when I was looking to buy a The Great Mouse Detective VHS a while back, and the first seller I contacted wanted 20 euros (around $27) for the tape. I kindly told the person he should know better than not only trying to sell used material as new (he was trying to make his money back in full), but also that VHS tapes have no collector's value, since there isn't an actual market for them, and took my leave. It gets even worse when, in the same website, there are people selling the exact same thing as he was, only charging 1 euro ($1.40) per tape. The dude didn't even bother to check.

That aside, I still have all my VHS tapes (Disney included), and wouldn't dream of selling them. I know magnetic tape wears with time, but I don't know... Between grainy picture and discs skipping or outright refusing to be played, I still think I'd rather have the former. I only jumped on the DVD bandwagon because of the multiple languages and extras... Which now they're taking away to force everyone to get Blu-Rays. AAAAAAAAARRRGGGGHHHH.

Anyway, maybe if you had Song of the South, or some other rare stuff, you'd be able to get more than a few bucks, but most Disney tapes are so commonplace that I just don't see them ever having that kind of value.

By the way, slight off-topic: does anyone know if US VHS tapes play in standard European (not French) VCRs? I've occasionally come across a few tapes on eBay I was interested in, but the research I did on the subject was inconclusive.

You actually can get some money for Disney VHS tapes, but they are specific ones. They need to be mint condition original Masterpiece Collection ones with the harder clamshell cases, with the gold border. Any other vhs, remastered or just a regular copy, isn't worth anything. We've held on to all of those ones for sure, but got rid of a lot of the regular ones.

You won't get a ton of money for them, but its something. I don't know if I'd ever want to part with them, they mean a lot to me and my family so we'll see.

Hehehe. Yeah, I think I'll just end up keeping them for myself. I didn't know they did added scenes, that's kind of upsetting. I mean, on one hand I'm interested and want to see, but on the other hand my inner child says no! LOL

I think it's so cool you were able to get the original soundtrack on the dvds!

I have a TON of VHS in general and all my Disney movies are on VHS save one or two. I simply haven't been able to keep up with the whole vault thing and when I do have the cash to buy a dvd, it isn't often that the Disney movie I want is out. My roommate is in the Disney club, perhaps I should join to keep up to date.

I have a couple extra VHS and maybe I can sell them for like $1.00 or something online, but even though the shipping is relatively cheap. I can't imagine people would want to pay for that. What do you think?

I've got Hercules with the wrapping still on it. It's been torn in a corner, but the wrappings there. I suspect I should just take it off and watch it, hehehe because it's been a while since I've seen it! :smilepony:

Yeah, I doubt I have anything mint condition, lol  I mean, I was a kid and I must have watched those movies over and over. I have snow white with the gold border, but it's the only copy I have. I don't see myself giving that one up.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering what all the fuss was about :smilepony:

Yep it is so sad :( luckily, only few movies have some new stuff and they all are small scenes. Lion king and Beauty and the beast got some new scenes. Bambi got new voices in the dubs and in Aladdin they changed some words like in the first song they singed in VHS heads cut off but in DVD they sang smelling armpits.... :D

I love VHS tapes & I collect them. I don't know much about value though..All I know is, as stated above, the early 80's & below Disney clamshell VHS tapes are the most valuable.

Something else I know that is not well known is two of the most sought after disney tapes are the little mermaid clamshell original release & the rescuers clamshell original release. I actually have both, the little mermaid was a gift when I was a kid & luckily since I hated as a kid it's in absolute perfect condition (not even sure if it's opened, I just know we have it deep in our entertainment center's VHS closet).
The reason these are so sought after is actually due to a silly rumor based on some fact. Shortly after the release of the TLM, the re-released versions cover art completely changed. This was due to a very silly belief that Disney had subliminal...innuendo in the cover. It was the shape of one of the towers in the Atlantica palace. It looked..like something kids like to draw in public places. ^^; The story goes these subliminal messages were continued from several Disney classics. In the case of the rescuers, during one scene there was supposedly a naked women in a window with no sensor over her chest. When the movie was re-released, the scene was edited & the silhouete is gone. Not sure how valuable these may make them, but they are beloved by a few VHS lovers. Much like the supposed suicide silhouete in the wizard of oz (which is, so far, the only one that is admittedly true) & is only in the VHS tapes.

If you search these, you'll probably find some screenshots/articles if you don't believe me. XD
Anyway, I'd say keep em. VHS are most valuable to the original owners I believe :)

Hohoho, don't even get me started on the Vault. I do understand the concept, and it really isn't that much to fret over... If you don't live in Portugal.
I don't know why, but some releases just don't happen here. For example, never mind that The Black Cauldron was rereleased on DVD in 2010, the only release we ever got was the VHS one waaaaaaaay back in 1998.
Another that baffles me is The Great Mouse Detective, which is probably my favorite Disney movie of all time, and of which Portuguese distributors also skipped both DVD releases. The last time that movie was available here was in 2000, on VHS only. I ended up buying a 1992 VHS (alongside a The Black Cauldron tape from the same seller. Score!) and ordering a French DVD just to finally own it, I just got fed up with waiting.

And this was another edition of "PrincessLio complains about living in Portugal though nobody asked for it".

Hmm, I don't know. I guess it would depend on the people. I, for example, don't mind paying more for shipping than for the actual item I'm getting, if
1. it's an item I really, really want, and/or
2. we're talking about smaller sums, like, say, an item that costs $1, plus $4 shipping. Even if the shipping outweighs the actual item by 75%, it's still fairly acceptable in my book. However, a larger sum, for example $30 plus $50 for shipping, is off limits for me to even consider.
Then again, that's just me, I don't know what the general opinion is, or even if this makes any sense to anyone else.

vhs

:flutter2:I still have all my Disney Vhs I've so fed up with the changing Technology that i don't want to replace them. Because i know that by the time i get all the Blue rays i'll only have to buy them all again anyway because they'll have brought something new out :( I love Disney but they always cost so much that it's tough to get them all. Here the blue rays are 30 dollars each. I always want to collect them and i miss watching them as my vhs player broke due to cat error. However i could be spending my money on PONYS

Song of the South would be the only one I could think of that would be worth it. And if I had it I wouldn't dare sell it! Owning a vhs wasn't a big thing when I was a kid (that was more like my little sister's generation) but going to see the rerelease in the theater was. I saw them all! Even Song of the South. I miss those days.

$30 for a Blu-Ray? That's how much a new DVD costs around here. If you're lucky you'll get a discounted Blu-Ray at that price now, but until recently Blu-Rays costed 30€ (~$41) each.

That said, I don't own a Blu-Ray player, and don't plan on getting one. It's one thing when the leap in technology allows for things that were impossible before, but another is attempting to kill off the predecessor when it's still perfectly viable.
One thing I loved about DVDs was the language options and the extras, that you couldn't put in a VHS. As soon as Blu-Rays started flooding the market, DVDs were packaged with only the bare essentials (original version, dubbed version, random single extra and a featurette telling you what a backwards moron you are for not having bought a Blu-Ray). Like they wanted to make the consumers believe that DVDs became worse and are now obsolete. What does Blu-ray have that DVDs don't? Better resolution. That's it.

Just out of curiosity, did this also happen in the U.S.? I'm guessing at least in Europe it did.

Yes well i think it's a bit cheaper in the us For blu rays's than Canada. But yes the same things happen Blue ray and 3d Blue ray have taken over and there's much less from dvd but you can get dvd'd here for 5. Unless there brand brand new

Not to totally derail the topic, and I might be misunderstanding what you mean, but the Wizard of Oz rumor is false (it was a large bird in the background), and the one about the Rescuers is actually true.

Here the blue rays are 30 dollars each.

Try to find them on discount :p all products will get on discount at some point so try find them when they are cheaper.

I have collected all my disney dvd (not blue ray..) from discounts. They have costs about 7-14$ dollars. If they are new, they cost about 28$ or more.. so I just lurk around the discount shelves and wait to my dvds come to discount
